No mere river crossing, the
Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most popular
New York attractions. When it opened in 1883, the bridge was considered a feat of engineering: It was the first structure built to span the East River, and at the time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Now, the landmark attracts thousands of tourists and locals, who take in spectacular views of lower Manhattan and other city landmarks (such as the
Statue of Liberty and
Governors Island) as they stroll across its more than mile-long span. (You may also run into the occasional cyclist trying to navigate through the crowds on the pedestrian walkway.)
