Transcendent Kingdom tells a universal story.

Gyasi does an excellent job of exploring the racial and cultural issues that people of African descent face living in the South. The book also provides a glimpse of the personal heartache that accompanies living with and loving someone addicted to drugs. For me, the overarching theme is how Gifty works through the religious contradictions of her youth, and triumphs over the adversities in her own life to achieve personal success.

Confusing writing but great character depth

I thought I would enjoy this more than I did. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. It took a minute to get into it. And the back and forth between Giftys past and present was pretty confusing at first. I did love the detail the author went into with the neuroscience and what Gifty was doing for school. As well as why she went into that field. The author also did an excellent job in describing the clashes between religion and science. It's a huge battle, even to this day. It just took me a while to get into and didn't really care when I got to the end. Im not sure if it's because of the writing itself of the structure of the book, but, I did enjoy some parts of it.
