Book Overview

A riveting middlegrade dystopian novel from New York Times bestselling Wake author Lisa McMann that Kirkus Reviews calls "The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter."

Every year in Quill, thirteen-year-olds are sorted into categories: the strong, intelligent Wanteds go to university, and the artistic Unwanteds are sent to their deaths.

Thirteen-year-old Alex tries his hardest to be stoic when his fate is announced...

Great book, but inaccurate condition

I bought this book in "Very Good" condition, but was disappointed to find that it had a bit of water damage, a badly peeling spine, and creased last three pages and the back cover. As for the story itself, I read this series as it was coming out in elementary/middle school and very much enjoyed all of it. It's definitely one of those books where adults/skeptics reading it have to suspend their disbelief a bit in order to enjoy, however. My brother was one such reader, who said that the kids at the beginning were acting more like they were going to the juvenile camp in Holes then being sentenced to death, and that while we the readers know they get saved, they wouldn't and therefore should have been more scared. On the other hand, I just saw it as a demonstration of how they're so desensitized to death because of how they were raised in Quill.

Fast moving and engaging

This book jumps right in and captures your attention! The writing is fabulous and was very enjoyable for both children, young adults and adults alike.

The Unwanteds is the best book I have ever read!

I liked how there was a broad range of characters and that it started fast so that you don't think immediately, oh this book is boring. The best part of it is that there is a whole series with it and then one after that series. I had no problems with it.

Good ideas

Storyline is really good, though the romance subplot seems forced and slightly annoying at times.
