James Cleverly was the home secretary between 2023-24 and has been the shadow home secretary since July 2024. Early in the Iraq war he helped fellow reservist soldiers return to their former jobs and unsuccessfully ran to become the Conservative MP in Lewisham East, where he grew up. He was elected to the London Assembly in 2008 to represent Bromley & Bexley and entered parliament in 2015 as the member for Braintree in Essex. Cleverly became education secretary under Boris Johnson and foreign secretary under Liz Truss.
