Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling seal loans – deadline day as it happened

Chelsea finalised a dramatic double loan deal on Friday night to bring Jadon Sancho to Stamford Bridge and send Raheem Sterling to Arsenal.

After a frantic deadline day in which Sancho was the subject of a failed loan bid from Juventus, Chelsea had an offer accepted to take the 24-year-old winger on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy the player for £23 million at the end of the campaign.

And at around 1am, Sterling completed a straight loan move to Arsenal with the clubs agreeing to share his wages of about £325,000 a week. A deal sheet for the player had been submitted by the 11am close of the transfer window, giving the clubs an extra two hours to get the move finalised.

Chelsea had tried to push Sterling, who has three years left on his contract, out to the Saudi Pro League but the player made it clear he had no desire to play there. United then showed interest in a deal, with Sancho moving in the other direction, but when that fell apart Arsenal were left as the only option to rescue him from west London.

At the start of the window, United were asking for a fee of £40 million for Sancho, who spent last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund. With the winger off the books, the club will save more than £10 million in wages this season alone. Sancho made only 83 appearances for United after his £73 million transfer from Dortmund in July 2021.

Sancho was surplus to requirements at Old Trafford even though he buried the hatchet with manager Erik ten Hag after their falling out last season. He called Ten Hag a liar on social media last September after the Dutchman claimed that he had dropped him for the match against Arsenal because he had trained poorly that week.

Sancho’s arrival at Stamford Bridge coincides with Sterling’s exit. The 29-year-old winger was frozen out at Chelsea after being told by head coach Enzo Maresca on the eve of the Premier League season two weeks ago that he was not part of their plans.

Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, is an admirer of Sterling after they worked together at Manchester City, where he was assistant manager. “My time with Raheem was exceptional,” Arteta said last week. “We built a really strong relationship together. He was unbelievable at that time. He taught me a lot as well, about individuals, how the players think, how we help them and support them. He is someone I have really strong feelings about.”

Premier League transfer window: ins and outs for summer 2024

Arteta admitted that Arsenal were short in attack after being unable to find a versatile winger. Nico Williams, his primary attacking target, decided to stay at Athletic Bilbao. They also sold the striker Eddie Nketiah to Crystal Palace for an initial £25 million plus £5 million in add-ons.

Edu, the Arsenal sporting director, said the club had not intended to sign Sterling at the beginning of the transfer window. “To be here on the last day of the transfer window, to get someone like Raheem Sterling, which I believe will be someone very important for the squad, who is going to give a lot to the team, it’s a pleasure,” he said. “It makes a lot of sense to have someone like him because I’m pretty sure he is going to add a lot in the squad. He has experience, he understands more than anyone the league, he’s played in the Champions League many times.”

If he had not found a way out, Sterling would have been expected to return to the Chelsea training ground with the other players who have been left out of Maresca’s first-team squad. The “bomb squad” are not allowed to use the first-team facilities after the club made it clear they would not be part of the head coach’s plans.

Not everything went to plan for Chelsea, however, as their attempts to sign Victor Osimhen hit a dead end. They made a number of offers for the Napoli forward, who gave Chelsea hope by not giving the green light to a move to Al-Ahli. The Saudi Pro League side agreed a fee of up to £67 million and offered him a four-year contract worth more than £30 million a year.

A Chelsea official travelled to Italy to try to sign Osimhen from Napoli, who wanted to sell him after bringing in Romelu Lukaku from the west London club. He could potentially still move to Saudi Arabia, where the window closes on Monday, but looks more likely to stay at Napoli.

Transfer window shuts

Crash, bang, wallop — that’s the sound of the transfer window slamming shut for another summer, but there’s still two hours for clubs to put the finishing touches on any deals as long as they submitted deal sheets before the deadline.

Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho, in particular, will be grateful for the extra breathing space as they close in on moves to Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively.

Chelsea’s Osimhen hopes fading

Gary Jacob writes: Chelsea’s hopes of signing the striker Victor Osimhen are fading.

The west London club, who are edging closer to a deal to offload Raheem Sterling to Arsenal on loan, made a number of offers for the Napoli forward, who gave Chelsea hope by not giving the green light to a move to Saudi side Al-Ahli. A Chelsea official travelled to Italy to try to sign Osimhen but it appears their efforts have been in vain.

He could potentially still move to the Saudi league as the window closes on Monday.

Man United sign Ugarte

Paul Hirst writes: Ninety minutes before the window was due to close, Manchester United finally announced that Manuel Ugarte had joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain, signing a five-year contract with the option of a further year.

United have paid a fee of £42.3million for the Uruguay international and PSG will receive a further £8.5million in performance-related add-ons.

PSG successfully argued for a 10 per cent sell-on clause to be inserted into the deal for Ugarte, who was described by Dan Ashworth, United’s sporting director, as “among the very best ball-winning midfield players in the world”.

He added: “His qualities, experience and passion will be a great complement to our strong group of midfielders.”

The Times understands the deal will not be happening, despite the late approach. Forest were not keen to sell and their valuation of the player — around £50 million — was outside of Newcastle’s. There was talk of a swap deal between the clubs but that did not appeal to Forest.

The 22-year-old, who Newcastle asked about earlier in the window, will instead be staying at the City Ground.

McTominay joins Napoli

Paul Hirst writes: Erik ten Hag said this lunchtime that he had “mixed” feelings about the prospect of Scott McTominay leaving and now the midfielder’s departure has become a reality after Napoli confirmed his arrival by posting a picture of him signing his contract in the centre circle of their famous stadium, which is named after former player Diego Maradona.

United posted a farewell message to their 27-year-old academy graduate, thanking him for creating some “fabulous memories” during his 22 years at the club, such as his long-range strike against Manchester City in 2020.

Napoli have paid United £25.7million for McTominay, who had one year left on his United contract. United will earn 10 per cent of any future fee that Napoli receive for the midfielder.

Arsenal in talks over Sterling loan

Charlotte Duncker writes: Arsenal are in late talks with Chelsea over a potential loan move for Raheem Sterling, with the deal on pending a medical.

The forward has been exiled from Enzo Maresca’s squad and for most of the last week it has appeared there would be no viable exit route for the 29-year-old. Chelsea had tried to push Sterling out to the Saudi Pro League, a move which could still happen with the window there still open for a few more days, but the player has made it clear he has no desire to play in the Gulf state.

Discussions with Manchester United had collapsed earlier in the week after the figures did not match up, despite Chelsea’s interest in Jadon Sancho.

There are now deadline day talks with Arsenal over a potential loan move for the former Manchester City man as Mikel Arteta is a big admirer of the forward. The deal is believed to appeal to Sterling and is moving closer pending a medical.

Arteta, who worked with Sterling at City, has been very complementary about the forward in recent weeks. “My time with Raheem was exceptional,” Arteta said last week. “We built a really strong relationship together. He was unbelievable at that time. He taught me a lot as well, about individuals, how the players think, how we help them and support them. He is someone I have really strong feelings about.”

Palace sign Lacroix

Crystal Palace have signed the defender Maxence Lacroix from Wolfsburg in a deal worth up to £18million. The French 24-year-old previously worked with the Palace manager Oliver Glasner at the German club.

Lacroix will replace Joachim Andersen, who left Palace earlier this month to join Fulham.

Palace have also reached an agreement to sign Trevoh Chalobah, the defender who has been exiled at Chelsea, on a season-long loan deal, with no obligation or option to buy.

Odsonne Edouard, the Palace striker, is wanted by Leicester City on a season-long loan. Palace had been seeking £20million for the striker.

Manchester United have announced the signing of the highly-rated 18-year-old Sekou Kone.

The Mali youth international, who joins from Guidars FC in his homeland, caught the eye of several Premier League clubs after his showings at the Under-17 World Cup last year.

The club say he will “initially be supported by the academy in order to give him time to settle into life in Manchester”.

Sean Dyche, the manager, said: “Orel has Premier League experience, which is important to help him adjust as quickly as possible, and his performances for Belgium and in Europe underline the quality he can bring to us at Everton.”

Ernest Nuamah, who had also been on Everton’s radar, is set to stay at Lyon. The 20-year-old winger wants to remain in France after the two clubs agreed another deal.

Everton have confirmed that the teenage striker Francis Okoronkwo has completed a loan move to Salford City.

Newcastle approach Forest over possible Elanga move

Martin Hardy: Newcastle United have made a late, late approach for the Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga with a fee of £35million discussed. Forest are thought to want around £50million for the 22-year-old. Newcastle, who failed with a £65million move for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guéhi, do have the money.

Eddie Howe said he wanted a centre half or a right winger in this window but that he didn’t think he would be able to sign both. Now that the Guéhi deal looks dead, it has allowed scope for a dramatic switch in focus.

Newcastle enquired about Elanga in June when they were sorting out PSR problems, but the price for the former Manchester United player was too high. They ended up selling Elliot Anderson to Forest and bringing in the Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Newcastle will try to sell Miguel Almiron in what will be a frantic end to the window.

Slot backs Bajcetic to make long-term Liverpool impact

Arne Slot has reassured Stefan Bajcetic that he can become a “very important player” for Liverpool after he completed a loan move to RB Salzburg.

Bajcetic, 19, has seen his career stall due to injury since March 2023 and managed only 98 minutes across three appearances last season. The move to Salzburg, where he will play for former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders, is designed to help him re-establish himself with Slot counting on the player in the long-term.

“I hope it will be a big year for him because he’s a very talented player and I think he could become a very important player for us, but only if he gets playing time now,” the Liverpool head coach said. “If you are that young and you’ve been out for so long, the only thing you need is playing time.

“He could have playing time over here, but we’ve got six or seven very good midfielders, so his playing time here will always be more limited than we expect him to play at Salzburg. So for him, and us, we think it’s best for him to play at the moment, instead of maybe playing a few times and then being on the bench for a long time again. Then for next season, we’ll have a player. If he fulfils his potential, could definitely, definitely play for us in the future.”

Bajcetic will link up with Bobby Clark, who moved to Salzburg earlier this month in a £10million deal.

Ten Hag: PSR rules forced us to sell McTominay

Some interesting quotes from Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United manager, on Scott McTominay, who is putting the finishing touches on a move to Napoli. “I am very happy for him but it is a case of mixed feelings because I wouldn’t prefer to lose him,” Ten Hag said. “He is Man Utd in everything, he was so important for Man Utd, he was here for over 22 years but unfortunately it is the rules. Homegrown players bring more value and that is not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it is a good deal. Scott is happy with it, and Napoli and us.”

Brentford accepted a £40million offer for Toney, who was in the last year of his contract in west London. He has agreed a three-year deal, worth £17million a year, to join Al-Ahli. Clubs in the Saudi Pro League are permitted to buy players from abroad up to Monday, September 2.

Chelsea still pushing for Osimhen

Gary Jacob writes: Chelsea’s attempt to sign Victor Osimhen, who is resisting an offer to join Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, will go down to the wire. The Napoli forward’s possible arrival in west London would be in addition to trying to secure Jadon Sancho, the winger, from Manchester United.

Napoli want to sell having agreed to sell Osimhen to Al-Ahli for upto £67million. He has been offered a four-year contract worth more than £30million a year. Osimhen earns around £200,000 a week after tax in Italy which is among the complicated factors in the deal to move to London instead.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have loaned Djordje Petrovic to Strasbourg for the season. The French club are owned by the same owners of Chelsea.

Sancho to Chelsea?

Paul Hirst writes: Chelsea have emerged as frontrunners for the signature of Jadon Sancho. Juventus’s chances of signing the winger from Manchester United are said to be fading because Chelsea’s offer for Sancho would be better financially for United.

Juve wanted United to pay part of Sancho’s wages during a season-long loan. The Italian club would only commit to an option to buy Sancho at the end of the loan rather than an obligation to do so. Chelsea have offered to sign Sancho on loan but the terms on offer are better for United. Sancho, 24, is open to a move to Stamford Bridge either on loan or permanent basis.

Chelsea offered Carney Chukwuemeka as part of negotiations but United are unlikely to accept the 20-year-old midfielder as part of the deal.

Other than Scott McTominay, Sancho is likely to be the only exit from Old Trafford today. Similarly, United are not looking to bring anyone else in unless Chelsea come up with a player that appeals to them as part of the Sancho transfer.

They have already rejected the chance to sign Chelsea left back Ben Chilwell and have ended their interest in his team-mate Raheem Sterling.

Guéhi to stay at Palace

The Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed England defender Marc Guéhi is staying at the club. Guéhi, who starred at this summer’s European Championship, has been a target for Newcastle all summer but they did not meet Palace’s valuation of the 24-year-old.

“Yes, I can confirm [he stays],” Glasner said “But it was never really in doubt. First of all, congrats to Crystal Palace, the chairman and the everyone that they didn’t give in. Especially after the transfer of Joachim Andersen it was very important that Marc stays.

“Also thank you to Marc. We were always very close and talking a lot. All the rumours didn’t influence his performance, his mood, his personality. He always told me he’s not pushing to leave Crystal Palace and for me that’s the most important thing, that the players tell me that they like to play for Crystal Palace. Marc told me very often and acted in the same way and showed his fantastic character again.”

Gary Jacob writes: Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur will not sign anyone today. Tottenham have spent around £80 million net this summer on mainly young players and would have tried to sign another forward had Richarlison been sold. The Brazil forward rejected a move to Saudi Arabia.

“Yeah, I think so unless something surprising jumps out. No, I think that is it,” Postecoglou said.

The club are keen to offload Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilón,who both have one year left on their contract. Real Betis want to re-sign Lo Celso.

From Brazil to Black Country

Charlotte Ducker writes: Over at Wolves, André, the Brazilian midfielder, has landed in England to undergo his medical.

The club have also agreed a loan deal with Ajax for the winger Carlos Forbs. The agreement for the 23-year-old is believed to include an option to make the transfer permanent and he will now have to fly in and complete his medical before the deadline.

Wolves are also still trying to sign a centre back but hopes are fading of reaching an agreement for a player they believe would strengthen the squad in the coming hours.

Gary O’Neil, the head coach, said today: “As we progressed through the window we missed [players] that we thought would help us for different reasons — sometimes financial, sometimes the fact they have gone before we were ready to do it.”

Daniel Podence is on the verge of leaving for Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab in a deal worth about £4.2million. It is not a deal that needs to be completed by the 11pm deadline due to the window staying open in Saudi but it is understood he is expected to depart from Molineux.

Gary Jacob writes: Armando Broja could leave Chelsea despite a foot injury which seemed likely to keep him at the west London club until January. The forward, 22, has interest from Ipswich Town, whose medical flagged the issue this week. Napoli offered more than £12million potentially rising to £18million for Gilmour, who moved to Brighton from Chelsea for £9million in 2022. Napoli are also set to sign Scott McTominay, his Scotland team-mate, from Manchester United.

Forest target triple deal

Charlotte Duncker writes: Transfer deadline day and Nottingham Forest have gone hand in hand the past couple of years with the East Midlands club busy on the final day of the window ever since their promotion to the top flight.

In true Forest style there’s potential for anything to happen but three deals seem most likely.

The club have agreed a loan deal, with no obligation to buy, with West Ham for James Ward-Prowse.

Forest are also working on a permanent deal for Brazilian defender Morato from Benfica. It is expected he will arrive on a deal worth about £12.6million and could become their 11th signing of the summer. The club have been looking to bring another forward in but that seems unlikely at this point while there potentially could be a deal agreed for Matt Turner to move to Crystal Palace. Palace lost Sam Johnstone to Wolves this week.

Chelsea are also looking at Ferguson, the Brighton & Hove Albion forward who missed the opening two league matches due to an ankle problem that prematurely ended his campaign last season. It is unclear if he would be available, even on loan.

No Chelsea move for Calvert-Lewin

Paul Joyce writes: There has been interest in Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Chelsea, who is valued at around £25million despite entering the final year of his contract.

A proposal was discussed for Everton to take Stamford Bridge striker David Datro Fofana, who spent time on loan at Burnley last season.

However, the values each club placed on each player were too far apart. Chelsea, for example, would see Calvert-Lewin as nearer the sort of £10million rising to £12.5 million fee that Liverpool have just paid Juventus for Federico Chiesa, who was also in the final year of his deal at the Italian club. It does not seem Everton were overly keen on Fofana.

As it stands, Calvert-Lewin will stay at Goodison Park and can sign a pre-contract from foreign clubs from January 1.

Hard times for Howe

Martin Hardy writes: As it stands Newcastle won’t be signing Marc Guéhi. Newcastle are £5million short of Crystal Palace’s £75million asking fee and Eddie Howe has admitted that the whole transfer window has been his hardest since he joined the club.

“With such short time left it is looking difficult,” he said. “We are in a really difficult situation with the PSR situation and available funds and attracting the right players who can make a difference.

“It’s such a delicate spot for us. We have to hit it right and if we don’t then doing nothing, as frustrating as that is, is probably the best option.

“While there is time there is still hope. I don’t think we will be closed right until the end.”

He was asked if his squad is weaker than when the transfer window opened and he said: “You can make an argument for that.”

Saudi work to do

Gary Jacob writes: There is still plenty of work to be done if Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen are to end up in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Pro League clubs are allowed ten foreign players in their 25-man squads. Al-Ahli do not have slots available to sign two foreign players, unless one of them is aged under 21. For Al-Ahli to sign Toney and Osimhen they would have until the end of their deadline on Monday to sell a foreign player.

If Al-Ahli cannot take both forwards, Toney could potentially move to a different team in the league because all Pro League clubs have access to a central fund.

Pep Guardiola is happy with his squad, which includes one new face in Savinho, the £30million signing from Troyes, and another not-so-new face in Ilkay Gundogan, who has returned to the club on a free transfer following his exit from Barcelona.

Atletico Madrid, who signed Julián Álvarez from City for £81.5million earlier in the window, were also interested in loaning Matheus Nunes but Guardiola wants to keep him.

City have made a net profit of around £100million this summer thanks to the sales of João Cancelo, who has joined Al-Hilal for £21.2million, Sergio Gómez, who cost Real Sociedad £8.4million, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis, whose £20million switch to Southampton was triggered by their promotion to the Premier League. Paul Hirst writes: Juventus are interested in Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho but want to take him on loan with United paying part of his wages. Chelsea have looked at Sancho too, but United will only agree to sell to them if they give them Raheem Sterling in exchange.

Another potential United outgoing is Victor Lindelof. The Swede has been linked with a move to Lazio although any medical could be complicated by the fact that he has been suffering from a toe injury of late.

Scott McTominay began his Napoli medical at 9am this morning. The Scot is due to sign for the Italian club in a £25million deal.

Manuel Ugarte is expected to complete his £50.8million move to United from Paris Saint-Germain. United must register the 23-year-old Uruguay midfielder with the Premier League by midday if he is able to feature in Sunday’s Premier League match against Liverpool.

Wolves expecting to be busy

Charlotte Duncker writes: Gary O’Neil made it clear after the defeat to Chelsea that he wanted more players and the club have been working to bring in as many new players as possible.

Sam Johnstone is expected to be confirmed this morning having completed his medical yesterday with Wolves agreeing a £10million deal with Crystal Palace.

While midfielder André is due to fly into England this morning to undergo his medical before completing a deal. Wolves agreed a deal worth an initial £18.5million with Fluminense for the highly-rated Brazilian midfielder. The 23-year-old had a move to Fulham fall through earlier in the window.

Fulham want a winger

Marco Silva has revealed that Fulham are still in the market for another winger. The club lost Bobby De Cordova-Reid and Willian on free transfers this summer but brought in Emile Smith Rowe who can play out wide.

Silva reiterated Fulham need one more winger, with Lyon’s Ernest Nuamah linked. “I won’t talk names, just players of ours,” Silva said. “I won’t confirm and will just talk about our players. But it’s clear what position we’re looking for.

“I love all the players we have so far. We are confident we can get the last player and piece from the market, which is a wide player.

“We lost two wingers last season and we need to sign one more.”

Where will Sterling go?

Charlotte Duncker writes: One of the biggest potential deals to watch today is Raheem Sterling. Will be get the move both he and Chelsea so desperately want?

Chelsea need another club to do them a favour and agree to take him but his wages, over £300,000 a week, are a huge sticking point. They have spoken to Manchester United about him but talks have so far failed to progress while they have also touted him out to various other Premier League clubs.

Mikel Arteta has a good relationship with him after their time together at Manchester City but, again, there has been no progress to speak of to finalise a deal.

Chelsea keep offering Sterling, 29, to Saudi but he is very adamant he does not want to go there.

With three years left on the deal that Chelsea gave him it is up to them to find a solution to this mess. If they can’t then Sterling will have to stay at the club despite Enzo Maresca openly stating he has no part to play for him this season.

What happened yesterday? Chiesa a Liverpool player

Paul Joyce writes: Liverpool have completed the signing of the Italy international Federico Chiesa from Juventus for £10million.

The deal was finalised after Chiesa completed his medical on Thursday morning and while there is the potential for the fee to rise by £2.5million, all of the add-ons will only be triggered if Liverpool win the Premier League and Champions League during his stay.

The relatively low valuation of Chiesa, who turns 27 in October, reflects that he had entered the final year of his contract and that Juventus did not want to countenance losing him for nothing next summer.

West Ham trying to sell

Gary Jacob writes: West Ham United are set for a clear out after spending a net £83million, more than their planned budget this summer. Nayef Aguerd could follow fellow centre back Kurt Zouma to Saudi Arabia after he rejected a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers. He has interest from Al-Ittihad, the Saudi club managed by Laurent Blanc.

There are doubts over the future of defenders Vladimir Coufal and Konstantinos Mavropanos. In midfield, Maxwel Cornet is set to join Southampton on loan and James Ward-Prowse also has loan interest from Nottingham Forest. Ward-Prowse, 29, was signed by David Moyes, the previous manager who wanted to bring in players from the Premier League in contrast to the technical director, Tim Steidten, who sought younger signings from Europe. Up front Michail Antonio and Danny Ings, who are in the final year of their contract, seem likely to stay.

West Ham remain keen to complete the loan signing of Carlos Soler, the attacking midfielder, from Paris Saint-Germain.

Arsenal still in García talks

Gary Jacob writes: Arsenal have resumed talks to sign goalkeeper Joan García but have a fall-back option of a verbal deal for Neto on loan from Bournemouth.

The deal for García stalled as Arsenal have been unwilling to pay Espanyol’s £25million valuation. Mikel Arteta needs a back-up for David Raya after Aaron Ramsdale joined Southampton.

If there is no breakthrough, Arsenal are expected to push the button on Neto, 35, who is poised to lose his starting place after the arrival of Kepa Arrizabalaga at Bournemouth on loan from Chelsea.

Newcastle unlikely to add Trafford

Martin Hardy writes: The Times also understands that Newcastle’s bid to sign the Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford is unlikely to happen. Newcastle have five goalkeepers, after signing John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos in the deal that took Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest to ensure Newcastle did not break the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. Neither Vlachodimos (on loan) or Martin Dubravka have been offloaded yet.

Eddie Howe had wanted a new centre half and a new right sided forward before the window opened. He said last week he probably wouldn’t get both.

It means deadline day has much riding on it for Paul Mitchell and Darren Eales. Howe had warned in Germany in July that he needed to be happy at the club to guarantee his own future, with the Football Association and the England position still a possibility.

Chelsea still keen on Osimhen

Gary Jacob writes: A Chelsea official has travelled to Italy to try to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli, who are keen to offload the forward in a permanent deal after bringing in Romelu Lukaku.

Osimhen, 25, has been offered a four-year contract worth more than £30million a year by the Saudi Pro league side Al-Ahli, although his agent recently said that he had unfinished business in Europe.

The forward has scored a total of 65 league goals in four seasons at Napoli, where he has not played this term. He signed a contract extension in December 2023 until 2026, worth around £167,000 a week after tax, which would equate to around £295,000 a week before tax based on UK tax rates.

Osimhen’s transfer could affect Ivan Toney, who seems set to also move to Saudi Arabia from Brentford. Toney has an offer from Al-Ahli but it is not clear if they would sign both forwards. If they do not, Toney could move to a different team in the league because all Pro League clubs have access to a central fund.

Newcastle risk backlash over failure to land Guéhi

Martin Hardy writes: Newcastle are facing a transfer window backlash from supporters with their prolonged pursuit of Marc Guéhi in serious doubt and a summer that has left fans distinctively underwhelmed.

Newcastle had warned there was a ceiling on their valuation for the 24-year-old England centre half – their fourth bid was £65 million down with a potential £5 million in add-ons – and they told Crystal Palace on Thursday they would not go any higher. That has led to the deal possibly being shelved, with Guéhi having two years left on his contract at Selhurst Park.

It is the first time Paul Mitchell, Newcastle’s new sporting director, James Bunce, the new performance director and Darren Eales, the chief executive, have plotted a transfer window together. The trio were at the City Ground together on Wednesday night to see a penalty shoot-out victory for the club.

There is growing pressure on the three to improve Howe’s squad and it remains to be seen if Guéhi, who has been given the captain’s armband at Palace, now pushes for a move with talks appearing to have broken down.

Arsenal agree loan deal for Neto

Gary Jacob writes: Arsenal could sign two goalkeepers including the potential arrival of Neto on loan from Bournemouth. The two clubs have verbally agreed a loan move after Arsenal failed with a bid for Joan García, who has been valued at £25million by Espanyol. It is not clear if they will increase their offer for García.

Neto, 35, made 32 appearances last season, keeping seven clean sheets. He also played 90 minutes in all three Bournemouth matches so far this season but is poised to lose his starting place after the arrival of Kepa Arribalaga on loan from Chelsea. Neto, who has a contract until 2026, was named as the club’s captain by former head coach Gary O’Neil in February 2023. He has previously played for Valencia, Juventus and Fiorentina.

Mark Travers, another Bournemouth goalkeeper, has been linked to Crystal Palace.

Only 17 hours until the window slams shut!

It’s the final countdown. After opening on June 14, fast forward 77 days and there are still plenty of Premier League clubs scrambling to get deals over the line.

What do you need to know? Well clubs have until 11pm tonight to sign players but can announce deals after that deadline if they have submitted a deal sheet beforehand, which grants them a two-hour period to complete a signing.

Today is also deadline day for the other members of Europe’s “top five” leagues — La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1 — albeit with different timings. Germany shuts up shop at 5pm, Italy 5pm, France 10pm and La Liga, along with the EFL, Scotland and Premier League, at 11pm.

But once the day is done, there is still the chance to sell players to the likes of Saudi Arabia and Turkey, whose transfer windows close on September 2 and 13 respectively.
Let the carnage commence.
