If retro is cool, the Emmy awards are definitely on trend. TV fans with long memories could be mistaken for thinking the Television Academy has mistakenly dusted off its 1981 nominations list for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards because Shogun once again rules. Richard Chamberlain’s 1980 five-part miniseries managed 14 nominations, but FX/Disney+’s sumptuous historical drama based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel has eclipsed that performance, garnering 25 nods and leading the pack.

It is perhaps no surprise that the juries have celebrated the show in such emphatic fashion. Critics have heaped praise on this beautifully crafted fusion of Japanese history and big-budget premium television from the moment it arrived at the end of February. Initially nestled among the limited series shows, it has been upgraded after the announcement of a second season and will reap mayhem among the big-hitters — The Crown, The Morning Show, 3 Body Problem — in the outstanding drama category.

The claustrophobic kitchen drama The Bear is the second most nominated show this year after the sublime episode Fishes, about a slow-motion car crash of a family Christmas, brought it to mainstream attention. (These nominations are for that explosive series, not for the slow-burn third run of the show that has received a rather more lukewarm public response.) For some unknown reason The Bear is in the comedy series category (not many big laughs), as is another big winner, the true crime satire and fan favourite Only Murders in the Building, which has 21 nods.

There is lots of good news for British TV and talent, which, before the streaming revolution, would have had limited impact at the Emmys. The final series of The Crown, which some — at times rather unfairly — accused of fading away rather than burning out across its two parts, garnered 18 nominations, including for best drama, and individual nominations for Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville and Elizabeth Debicki.

Netflix has once again proved its power to propel what might otherwise have been a cult show on a British TV network into an international sensation: the controversial comedy drama Baby Reindeer has 11 nominations, including best limited series. Written by and starring Richard Gadd, a nominee alongside his co-star Jessica Gunning, it made headlines after the woman on whom much of the story was based decided to sue Netflix for £132 million.

Another feather in Netflix’s cap will come from the 13 nominations it has received for Ripley, including best actor in a limited series for man of the moment Andrew Scott. It took guts to make an eight-hour-long neo-noir psychological thriller in black and white that sits on a streaming service opposite Love Is Blind and Selling Sunset, but Steven Zaillian’s beautiful, cinematic masterwork proved its worth.

Elsewhere, Brits including Juno Temple (who wowed in Fargo season five), Gary Oldman (who wowed again and as always in the spy drama Slow Horses), Matt Berry (for the vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows) and Tom Hollander (Feud: Capote vs the Swans) are all in with a shout at the ceremony on September 7. There is also good news for the English football legend turned US soccer boss David Beckham, whose Netflix documentary about his life and career received five nominations.

HBO’s True Detective: Night Country starring Jodie Foster received a well-deserved 19 nominations and will look to score wins against other recognised shows including Prime Video’s game adaptation Fallout (16 nominations), film-to-TV adaptation Mr and Mrs Smith (16), Apple TV+’s The Morning Show (16) and HBO’s Hacks (16) and Fargo (15).

Who will take home the prizes at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles? If we look to history, Chamberlain’s Shogun took home only three awards out of those 14 nominations in 1981. So it’s anyone’s guess.

Here are the nominations for the major categories:
