Vardy turns back the clock

After the first round of Premier League matches, the bookmakers have seen nothing to persuade them that any of the newly promoted clubs will survive more than a season in the top flight.

Ipswich Town (4/5) and Southampton (5/6) were beaten by Liverpool and Newcastle United respectively on Saturday, but Leicester (4/9) encouragingly held Spurs to a 1-1 draw on Monday.

Jamie Vardy, a Premier League winner with the Foxes in 2015-16, scored the equaliser that earned the Premier League relegation favourites a point and later came close to adding a winner. Manager Steve Cooper will have been pleased with the resilience and fight his team showed.

Likewise, Ipswich more than held their own in the first half against Liverpool before Arne Slot’s men showed why they are among the title contenders with goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.

Southampton were perhaps the most unfortunate of the three new boys. A man to the good after Newcastle defender Fabian Schar was sent off in the 28th minute, the Saints finished 19-3 ahead on the shot count by the final whistle but a goal down on the scoresheet thanks to Joelinton’s strike.

Of the other relegation market leaders, Everton (9/4) got off to the worst start, losing 3-0 at home to Brighton after making a bright start.

Wolves (3/1) were beaten at Arsenal and Fulham (5/1) were edged out by Manchester United, but Nottingham Forest (11/4) made a solid start with a 1-1 home draw against Bournemouth.
