Synopsis
The denizens of the small town of Midburg are thrilled when one of their native sons, Dan Flannery, becomes a war hero while serving in the Merchant Marines. Newspaper editor Otis Piper, Mayor Clarence Teeple, Chief of Police Charlie Pickett, reporters Jimmy Curtis and Helen Pickett, and Charlie's sister Lottie prepare a celebration for Dan, at which they are to present him with a cash award. When Dan, who is on leave in San Francisco, receives word of the event, he is reluctant to attend, explaining to his fiancée, Mabel Taylor, that he has not been home in many years. After Mabel promises to meet Dan in Midburg, he decides to go, but before leaving, he is lured to the apartment of three conmen. The men, Al Carter, Marvin Lewis and Itchy, trick Dan into thinking that they can bet on horses for him, but Dan sees through the scam and a scuffle ensues. Dan hits his head during the fray, and while he is unconscious, the crooks see a newspaper story about Midburg's intention to present Dan with ten thousand dollars. When Dan awakens, he is suffering from amnesia, and Carter, Marvin and Itchy convince him that he is actually Joe Dugan, a notorious bank robber. They tell him about his "striking resemblance" to a war hero named Dan Flannery, whom he recently killed, and persuade him to go to Midburg in Dan's place to collect the award. Believing that he is Dugan, Dan assumes a tough demeanor and orders the three men to accompany him to Midburg, where he tells the welcoming crowd that they were his gunnery crew in the service. The men stay at Charlie's home, much to the delight of Lottie, who is awed by Dan's status as a war hero and begins to romance him. Dan is annoyed by Lottie's persistent attentions, but must endure it while awaiting the ceremony. More complications arise when Carter learns that Mabel has arrived in town to be married to Dan. Before Dan sees her, however, Carter and Marvin engineer Mabel's arrest for pickpocketing, and when she claims that she is Dan's fiancée, the still-forgetful Dan does not recognize her. The incident spurs Jimmy's suspicions though, and he begins to wonder if Dan is an impostor. After Lottie, who believes that she is now engaged to Dan, allows Dan to handle the strongbox containing the money, Jimmy gets his fingerprints from the box and sends them to the Merchant Marines for verification. Itchy then discovers that a San Francisco newspaper has printed a photograph of Dan and Mabel at the nightclub when their engagement was announced. Although Itchy tries to hide all copies of the paper, Jimmy finds one and shows Otis. Meanwhile, Dan wants to steal the money and leave, but Carter insists that they remain until the ceremony. Despite Marvin's efforts to hold Dan captive, he escapes, then steals the strongbox later that night after Marvin, Carter and Itchy blow open the safe holding it. The money is not in the box, however, as Jimmy's warning prompted Otis to hide the money elsewhere. While Otis and Jimmy are learning that although Dan really is Dan Flannery, he did not have a gunnery crew, Dan has tracked Carter, Marvin and Itchy to their San Francisco aparment. The three men protest that they do not have the money, and as they fight, Dan again hits his head and wakes up as himself. The police, Merchant Marine officials and Mabel, all alerted by Otis, arrive during the altercation, and Carter, Marvin and Itchy are arrested. As Mabel embraces the confused Dan, who does not remember any of his adventure, he proclaims that he did not want to go to Midburg anyway because he might have gotten into trouble.
