Drivers have called for action over “dangerous” potholes on a major A-road into a Wiltshire town.

In March, Marlborough residents complained about the “poor condition” of the A346 to the south of the town, after a child was seriously injured in a crash.

The incident took place at Cadley on March 9 and involved a car and a large lorry, which witnesses claimed lost control after hitting a pothole near the Postern Hill Campsite.

But despite calls for repairs, six months later motorists are reporting similar issues.

Speaking on Facebook, Debra Leighfield revealed her car had been damaged by a pothole on the same stretch of road and warned others to be aware.

She said: “Large pothole coming out of Marlborough to Burbage.

“Please be careful. It’s cost us a new tyre today and will need the alloy replacing as it’s buckled it.

“They need to chop out the entire stretch during the night and replace it all.”

This post sparked a significant response from other drivers in the area, who are all keen to see repairs carried out to the busy route.

Leah Pearson said: “You need a particular set of skills along that road, it’s actually astounding the state of it.”

“You have to report everything a million times on MyWilts”, added Becky Deane.

“More reports the better. I will do too as was like a slalom avoiding them this morning.”

Some drivers fear that the state of the road could cause more crashes in the future if left unrepaired.

Angela Lambert said: “I’m sure we all pay road tax and council tax and every other blinking tax and still we have to tolerate potholes in our roads which not only cost us more money but also put our lives at risk.”

The condition of the A346 has also proved controversial amongst residents living to the north of Marlborough in recent years.

Last year villagers in Ogbourne St George labelled the busy route a “death trap” with some claiming motorists “move into the middle of the road to avoid potholes”.

Cllr Nick Holder, cabinet member for highways, said: “We regularly inspect the A346, including between Marlborough and Burbage as part of our statutory duty to maintain the public highway and in response to customer reports. 

"Any defects identified during these safety inspections are attended to in accordance with the highway inspection manual. 

"We have completed remedial repairs at this location for both small isolated potholes and larger pothole clusters.

“We encourage people to report highways issues, such as potholes, to us for further investigation.
