A drunk who tried to run away from police in a town centre pub has been fined.

Michael Sheehan, 34, of Thornfold Drive, Westlea, Swindon, resisted arrest and spat at police before being placed in leg restraints and arrested on June 16.

He pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in a public place at Swindon Magistrates Court on July 3.

On the evening of his arrest, around 8pm, Sheehan is in the Wyvern Tavern and drunk.

Mr Adam Cooper, prosecuting, said: “He is staggering about, heavily intoxicated, swearing loudly and behaving in a disorderly way to the staff.”

When the police arrived to arrest him he tried to run away and spat at police.

Leg restraints had to be used while he continued to be verbally abusive.

Mr Cooper called it “a difficult and time-consuming offence for the police when there are more important things they could be doing”.

Sheehan has 46 convictions for 91 offences. He has convictions for drunk and disorderly from 204, 2018 and 2021 and for assault and criminal damage.

Mr Glendenning, defending, said Sheehan apologised to police and those in custody the next day. His apologies and early plea led to his financial penalty being reduced.

Sheehan, who already owes around £1,500 to the courts, was fined £40 with £40 in costs and a £16 surcharge.
