Pakistan beat South Africa by 81 runs in the second ODI on Thursday (December 19) at Newlands in Cape Town. As a result, they took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against the African nation.

After being asked to bat first, Pakistan scored a daunting total of 329 in the first innings before being bowled out in 49.5 overs. Babar Azam (73) and Mohammad Rizwan (80) set up a great platform for their side with a partnership of 115 runs. Kamran Ghulam utilized it perfectly and powered the Men in Green to 329 with a blistering knock of 63 (32) in the second half of the innings. Teenage pacer Kwena Maphaka scalped four wickets for the Proteas on debut, but gave away 72 runs.

In reply, Heinrich Klaasen played a magnificent knock of 97 (74) in the middle-order but did not get much support from the others, as South Africa were bundled out for 248 in 43.1 overs to lose the contest by 81 runs. Shaheen Afridi (4/47) and Naseem Shah (3/37) starred for Pakistan with the ball in the second innings.

"The first 25 overs we thought we were in control" - South Africa captain Temba Bavuma after loss vs Pakistan in 2nd ODI 2024

At the post-match presentation, South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma reflected on the loss, saying:

"Probably, the first 25 overs we thought we were in control. Didn't have wickets but the run-rate was under check. Next 25 overs we conceded too many. We will have conversations about that."

He added:

"Wasn't a lot on offer for the bowlers, just a little bit grip. In hindsight, will stick to the decision at the toss. (On not converting starts) As batters, that is where we let ourselves down. We know as a batting unit, when we are batting well have to get to the three figure mark. Need to convert those starts into match-winning contributions."

The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg will host the third and final ODI of the series on Sunday (December 22).
