Critics Consensus

It Comes at Night makes lethally effective use of its bare-bones trappings while proving once again that what's left unseen can be just as horrifying as anything on the screen.

Kambole Campbell One Room With A View It Comes at Night is a powerful, slow-burning horror, a distressing and nihilistic examination of human nature that lingers in the mind long after the shocking denouement. Rated: 4/5 Aug 25, 2018 Full Review K. Austin Collins The Ringer The movie has its flaws. But one of Shults's main triumphs is to get us to believe in the danger of the outside world as fiercely as his characters do. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review Jason Anderson Sight & Sound Shults's adoption of a more vicious mode sharpens his already discomfiting take on families in states of extreme duress in his debut feature Krisha. Jul 19, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson "It Comes at Night" is tightly comprised of excruciating moral challenges that escalate with time. Rated: 4/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Writer/director Trey Edward Shults builds so much tension with such vague storytelling, and I loved every bit of the ambiguity and metaphorical message it provides. Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s an unconventional horror picture. It’s a deep emotional treatment of loss. It’s a troubling, unorthodox coming-of-age story. The cool thing is how well Trey Shults packages all these things together without an ounce of conflict. Rated: 4/5 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Bill F the plot line is promising enough, but it's like the writers and director fell asleep or decided to move on to another project during production and just never really thought about developing the plot any further after the first 20 minutes. supreme let down and highly predictable disappointment. I want my 92 minutes back. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review Jason W Bought this on blu-ray knowing nothing about it, then read the bad reviews. However, I enjoyed it. Don't expect monsters or ghouls that attack at night (per the title), this is story of 2 families looking to survive within a world where some kind of sickness has taken over. If you are a fan of the Walking Dead style story and action, you might like it. Acting was excellent, the characters are likeable. No spoilers, but the ending was a bit depressing and almost got me choked up. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/29/24 Full Review Colson B This was so bad I can’t even explain Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/27/24 Full Review David H Such a slow and pointless movie. Hardly anything of note happens, the ending sucked, and the dog.... Just watch the trailer, it has all the interesting parts in it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/24 Full Review Chadd J The acting was alright and the story might have worked, but it was so boring it was hard to follow the plot. The ending was also terrible as well. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Riley A Unless you like being depressed & disappointed, I would not recommend this movie. This is the kind of movie that taught me to stop trusting movie reviews as much because the reviews from the “top critics” highlight all the emotional themes & revealing true human nature & artsy filmmaking. Whatever, Don’t waste an hour & 37 minutes of your life. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/02/24 Full Review Read all reviews
