Critics Consensus

Measured to the point of monotony, Brothers by Blood explores the generational impact of grief and violence in disappointingly tedious fashion.

Nick Allen RogerEbert.com A waiting game in which both the audience and the movie lose. Rated: 1.5/4 Jan 22, 2021 Full Review Peter Debruge Variety Casual viewers, unwilling to sit through 90 minutes that feel like three hours, won't find much interest in such a somber, slow-burn approach... Jan 22, 2021 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter It feels rather plodding... failing to turn the boxer's conflicting loyalties into the stuff of crime-flick high drama. Jan 22, 2021 Full Review Josh Parham Next Best Picture As uninspired the direction may be, the screenplay fares even worse with an indulgence in shallow characters, stale dialogue and tired tropes of a masculine criminal enterprise with emotional bonds that are incredibly weak. Rated: 4/10 Jun 5, 2022 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound Brothers by Blood starts off with plenty of promise then devolves into a rather dull film. Rated: 1.5/5 Apr 25, 2021 Full Review Kim Hughes Original Cin Visually drab, tonally flat, and with precious few sympathetic or relatable characters, Brothers by Blood should be elevated by its strong cast but remains steadfastly sluggish. joe w You should probably pass on this movie. Cliché after cliché. Weird moody acting in too many scenes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review michael k I was expecting more. Had the story and tone of a gritty crime drama. Love the mob stories of the low level in on glamorous neighborhood guys. But this story felt dull and cut corners to save on budget. Not showing shooting scene. Or showing guys get shot one and presume their dead. Not having a complete ending. It felt they took choices to save on budget rather than to have a compelling full story. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review jelisije j A movie that takes it time to develop the tension of a man who must decide whether or not to back up his brother or to kill him before he destroys everything and everyone around him Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member What should have been a powerful film about generation pain and problems, instead comes out as a boring crime family just dealing. Great actors with decent acting - but the substance after the history is revealed doesn't hold up. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member It's better than these critical reviews tend to indicate. But there is no question: it's indeed grim, bleak, and plodding. Circumstances and events lead inexorably to predestined outcomes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Don't know why the so called "critics" have all hated it. Excellent movie, deep dark tale with a TOP LEVEL cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
