Critics Consensus

While it's far better than it could have been, José Padilha's RoboCop remake fails to offer a significant improvement over the original.

Scott Tobias The Dissolve [A]fter an opening sequence as promising as the one here, it needs at least an attempted follow-through, not the jumble of confused ideas and time-wasting effects that take up the bulk of the film. Rated: 2.0/5 Feb 20, 2014 Full Review Christopher Orr The Atlantic Surveying the peculiar array of 1980s retreads clustered into release this week, I'm reminded of Marty McFly in Back to the Future Part II, traveling forward in time 30 years to discover that everything is still the same, only worse. Feb 14, 2014 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) The Brazilian director José Padilha may be working for a Hollywood studio but he doesn't temper his critique of American imperialism, big business and political corruption. Rated: 3/5 Feb 14, 2014 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz What could have been a depressing assault on the childhood of those who grew up in the 1980s was instead one of the best action-sci-fi movies since Minority Report over a decade earlier. Rated: 5/5 Apr 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It isn’t as provocative as it wants to be. It isn’t as clever as it tries to be. It isn’t as witty as it needs to be. But it is more fun than I ever expected it to be. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 24, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review A smarter-than-average actioner that may not be as fun or edgy as Verhoeven’s, but manages to do what remakes so often strive and fail to accomplish: It achieves a new take on an old classic and does so with enough innovation to warrant its existence. Korra N Not a classic like the original, but still fairly relevant in its execution, RoboCop (2014) is a sleek and well-produced action-thriller with a lot on its mind but not enough time to fully explore the themes it's juggling. Still, it's a better movie than the sequels. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review Lúcio Leonardo P The 1987 film was a landmark in science fiction/action cinema, becoming a true classic. When I saw that they would do a remake, I was a little worried, even though I knew that the direction was in the capable hands of director José Padilha (TROPA DE ELITE). Of course, for me, the old one is better, because the story was original and the drama of a man becoming a machine is deeper and more violent than the new version, which is more familiar. Even so, it has its charm and my respect, because, in addition to showing the same conflicts (but in a lighter way), it delves into the theme that some large cooperative companies pretend to do good to just obtain more profits. The action is guaranteed even without spilling a drop of blood, the actors' performance is good, the plot is very enjoyable and the special effects do not disappoint. I just think that some catchphrases from the original Robocop were not used or explored well, which is a shame. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/16/24 Full Review Chris D It's you usual modern director thinking they can do better their way, make Robo faster and have more guns and more enemies and yet it feels so much less because its all cgi and unrealistic. Robo himself look terrible like a guy in a cheap plastic Halloween suit, you don't get any impression he's a cyborg, looks like something from one of the 80s robocop/terminator low budget rip offs Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Liam D A movie that you can tell had studio interference. This is an soulless and boring action movie that dares to call itself Robocop, heck I wouldn’t buy it for an dollar Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review Rob G Void of anything that made the first film great. Void of personality, c.g.i overload... what a waste of time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Phoenix L I mean…it’s alright. Joel Kinneman really did all he could. And despite a solid ghost in the shell performance, this movie just doesn’t offer anything beneficial, new or impressive compared to the original. Good try, not the worst.
