Now the MetService long range forecast for all New Zealand to midnight Saturday
The Situation
High pressure lies over the country. Northwesterlies strengthen over the lower South Island today as an active frontal system approaches there from the southwest. The front is expected to lie slow-moving over central New Zealand on Wednesday.
Looking at the weather to midnight tomorrow
Northland to Waikato, including Coromandel Peninsula
Mainly fine. Isolated showers becoming confined to the far north tonight.
Waitomo, the Central High Country and north Taranaki
Fine. Cloud and isolated showers developing overnight. Showers clearing tomorrow afternoon.
Bay of Plenty, also south Taranaki to Manawatu, Gisborne and Hawke's Bay
Mostly fine. A shower or two about the ranges this afternoon, and from south Taranaki to Manawatu tomorrow evening.
Horowhenua Kapiti Coast, Wellington and Wairarapa
Fine. Cloudy periods and isolated showers developing tomorrow afternoon.
Marlborough, Nelson, Buller, and Canterbury
Fine. Becoming cloudy with showers tomorrow morning, clearing in the evening.
Grey, and Westland
Isolated showers, turning to rain, heavy and possibly thundery, tomorrow morning. Becoming mainly fine tomorrow afternoon.
Otago, Southland and Fiordland
Scattered rain from evening, heavy in Fiordland, clearing tomorrow morning. Severe northwest gales in exposed parts of Southland and Fiordland this evening and early tomorrow.
Chatham Islands
Fine.
And the outlook for the following three days...
Thursday
North Island: Scattered rain developing from Waitomo across to Hawke's Bay and southwards. Isolated showers further north. South Island: Scattered rain in the east, clearing. Partly cloudy elsewhere, with isolated afternoon showers inland.
Friday
North Island: Rain in the south and east, clearing. Isolated showers elsewhere. South Island: Rain in the northwest. Isolated showers elsewhere.
Saturday
North Island: scattered rain developing in the north. Isolated showers elsewhere. South Island: Rain in the west. Scattered rain developing in the east and south.
And at the Chathams
A few showers early Thursday, otherwise long fine spells. Rain developing Saturday evening. Northwesterlies, turning southerly early Thursday, then turning northeasterly on Friday and northerly on Saturday.
