One way to categorize fictional characters is by the character alignment system. Originating in the fantasy tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons, this system includes nine different alignments consisting of combinations of good, neutral, evil, lawful, and chaotic. Most anime characters can be sorted into this system.

Let's take a look at one of these alignments: lawful good. Lawful good characters are those who place a premium on following the rules, and are generally aligned towards doing the right thing. However, while these characters genuinely believe that the right way to approach life is through strict sets of rules - either institutional or personal - they will defy these systems if they're obviously immoral.

One classic example of a lawful good anime character is Jet Black of Cowboy Bebop, whose practical nature anchors the more chaotic members of the Bebop crew. A more recent example is Kinro of Dr. Stone, an Ishigami Village guard can't be easily persuaded into breaking rules.

  • Roy Mustang might be a little more hot-headed than one might expect from a lawful good character, but when you contrast him with characters like Edward Elric and Scar, his alignment becomes clear. Roy prefers to do everything according to the rules of the Amestrian military, and gets angry when other people can't do the same. However, when he notices that the Amestrian military isn't doing the right thing, he's willing to defy it in order to follow his inner morality.

Tanjiro Kamado is an honorable person whose main goal is helping his sister regain her humanity. Rather than go rogue, he chooses to become powerful enough to accomplish this by becoming an officially sanctioned Demon Slayer. Occasionally, though, he will bend the rules a little if it means doing the right thing.

  • Kinrou is one of the two guards of Ishigami Village, but he's the only one you can't get around without a fight. Kinrou strongly believes in upholding the rules of the village no matter what. Sometimes, this means he's a little inflexible, but ultimately his heart is in the right place.

  • Despite having awesome psychic abilities that he could easily use in nefarious ways, Mob Kageyama chooses to abide by the rules of society. He never uses his power to harm others except when he has to to protect the innocent.

This young hero-in-training places a premium on following the rules, but he's willing to break them if he thinks it serves a higher good, like protecting his friends. There's one time when he breaks the rules because his emotions get the better of him, but for the most part he's solidly Lawful Good.

  • It must be the exhausting to be the only lawful good character in a group that feeds on chaos, but that's Erza Scarlet's lot in life. This powerful warrior is a strict and serious person who is one of the only things actually holding Team Natsu together.

As a member of the Survey Corps, Armin Arlelt risks his life on a daily basis. Despite the genuine terror that he feels in his situation, he always puts his fear aside to do what he believes is right. Usually, that's achieved by following orders from his superiors - he has to be coaxed into relying on his own intelligence and acting on his own.

  • Once, Kenshin Himura was a renowned assassin who spent his life locked in guerilla warfare. Though his actions were violent, he lived by a code. Now, he lives by a new code, one where he refuses to take lives and takes the peaceful route whenever possible.

  • Unlike his father, who is definitely on the chaotic side, Gohan prefers leading a more orderly lifestyle and sticking to a self-defined code of conduct. He'll do whatever it takes to help those in need, but he does it by the book whenever he can. In this way, he takes after both his mother Chi Chi and his mentor Piccolo.

Rei Hino, aka Sailor Mars, worked as a miko (a shrine maiden), and was extremely diligent about performing her duties. That sense of diligence persists into her career as a Sailor Scout: they're going to help people, and they're going to do it the right way, no matter what nonsense Sailor Moon is getting up to.

  • Jonathan Joestar is the first protagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. He prides himself as a gentleman and treats everyone around him with respect - unless they prove to be absolutely undeserving. His personal moral code is unwavering.

White Blood Cell is an interesting example of this alignment. As a white blood cell, his primary goal is to protect the human body he resides in. He also shows a desire to help that isn't strictly mandated every time he redirects the lost Red Blood Cell. But he'll never do that in a way that even slightly deviates from the immune system's programming, because, you know, scientific accuracy.

  • Soichiro Yagami is the police chief in charge of the Kira investigation, of which his son is the prime suspect. The fact that he fits the lawful good trope makes his situation exquisitely painful: he's torn between obeying the law and protecting his children.

  • Doppo Kunikida's lawful good alignment has him in a perpetual state of irritation with those around him. He just likes to keep things organized so that the Armed Detective Agency can function properly and enjoy a good reputation, but Dazai is always ruining things for him with what Kunikida sees as carelessness and indiscretion.

  • Gaara - 'Naruto'
    15

When Gaara first appears, he's pretty much the opposite of lawful good - he's a seething ball of rage who can't be controlled by anyone. But after a massive character 180, he becomes dedicated to helping people through legal channels as the Kazekage.

Euphemia Li Britannia is the princess of a colonizing nation. While she isn't ready to totally burn down her loyalties to her family, it's important to her that the Japanese people have rights under their rule. She works within the confines of the law to make that happen.

  • Jet Black is a key member of the Bebop crew, and he's the only one not to fall somewhere on the chaotic spectrum. He used to be a cop, but became a bounty hunter in order to more effectively pursue his ideas about justice. He keeps the other members of the crew grounded.

  • Joe Kido is one of the Digidestined, or Chosen Children if you're going by the Japanese version. He's an anxious boy who needs the structure of routine and rules to feel safe, but he always does the right thing no matter how much it scares him.

  • As a member of the Public Safety Bureau, Akane Tsunemori is dedicated to upholding the law. This is true even when she finds out that the law is dramatically messed up - rather than breaking the law, she finds her own way to be just within the confines of the system.

Yes, Jinbe is a pirate who occasionally participates in illegal activities - but that doesn't mean he's not Lawful Good. Jinbe's reasoning for being a member of the Straw Hats is that he wants to protect his island home and promote peace between humans and fishmen. Basically, he's the type of Lawful Good who occasionally puts "good" above the law.
