Riley Keough's Daughter Has a Name Inspired by Elvis Presley
Amid the heartache of saying goodbye to her mother, Lisa Marie Presley, in January, Riley Keough and her husband, Ben Smith-Petersen, revealed that they have a daughter. Smith-Petersen first shared the news while reading a speech his wife wrote in tribute to her mother during Lisa Marie's Jan. 22 memorial service in Graceland.
"I hope I can love my daughter the way you loved me, the way you loved my brother and my sisters. Thank you for giving me strength, my heart, my empathy, my courage, my sense of humor, my manners, my temper, my wildness, my tenacity. I'm a product of your heart, my sisters are a product of your heart, my brother is a product of your heart," Smith-Petersen read for Keough, who sat in the front row, per People.
Keough and Smith-Petersen first met on the set of "Mad Max: Fury Road" in 2012. They officially began dating in 2013 and were engaged in 2014. In 2015, they were married in two different ceremonies: one in Nepal and one in Napa Valley, CA.
In May 2022, Keough wrote an essay for Vogue Australia about her relationship with Smith-Petersen in which she shared how she knew they had a future together after just one week of dating. "We stopped at this little gas station to get chips and fill up the tank. We were so young, he was 22 and I was 24, just getting coffee and smoking cigarettes, without a care in the world," she wrote of one of their early outings. "I remember as he walked out of the gas station, I so strongly had this feeling, and it was, 'That's the father of your children.' It was so crazy because we had only really hung out for a week."
In a conversation with Interview published on March 29, Keough revealed that she "became a mother in 2022." Then, in an Aug. 8 interview with Vanity Fair, she shared more details about her life as a mom — plus her and Smith-Petersen's daughter's name.
Ahead, here's what we know about Keough's one and only child.
Riley Keough's Daughter, Tupelo Storm Smith-Petersen
Keough's daughter is named Tupelo Storm Smith-Petersen — her first name, of course, being a nod to Keough's famous family. Tupelo's great grandfather and Keough's grandfather, Elvis Presley, was born in Tupelo, MS. "It's funny because we picked her name before the Elvis movie," Keough told Vanity Fair, referencing 2022's "Elvis." "I was like, 'This is great because it's not really a well-known word or name in relation to my family — it's not like Memphis or something.' . . . Then when the Elvis movie came out, it was like, Tupelo this and Tupelo that. I was like, 'Oh, no.' But it's fine."
Tupelo's middle name is a tribute to Keough's brother, Benjamin Storm Keough, who died in 2020. According to Vanity Fair, Tupelo was born in August 2022 via surrogate. "This is the thing in my life so far that I have really wanted to, quote-unquote, get right," the "Daisy Jones & The Six" star added. "I don't think you ever can be a perfect parent, but I would like to be the best mom for her that I can be. That's . . . very important to me."
