At the Summer Olympics, the critical moments that decide who wins or loses often flash by in the blink of an eye. In the men’s gold-medal table tennis match, above, China’s Fan Zhendong scores on Sweden’s Truls Moregardh with a quick shot to the corner. Below, we revisit some of the most visually stunning scenes captured by New York Times journalists, frame by frame.
Men’s Synchronized 10-Meter Platform Diving
In their final round of the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform, the three-time world champions Lian Junjie and Yang Hao of China executed a dive with four-and-a-half somersaults. It scored over 100 points, a rare feat in the sport, and sealed their gold-medal victory.
Men’s Basketball
In the quarterfinals of men’s basketball, LeBron James turned in a well-rounded performance, scoring 12 points along with 9 assists. He is shown here hitting his classic turn-around fadeaway jump shot from the post, as the United States beat Brazil, 122-87, to advance to the semifinal round against Serbia.
Women’s Boulder and Lead Climbing
Janja Garnbret of Slovenia, the gold medalist at the Tokyo Games, placed first in the semifinals of women’s boulder and lead — the combined sport-climbing event. For her lead segment, shown here, she climbed nearly to the top of the 15-meter route, earning 96.1 points out of a possible 100.
Women’s Balance Beam
Alice D’Amato of Italy scored 14.366 points to win a surprise gold medal in the women’s balance beam final. Her leaps during the routine, shown below, were about three feet above the beam. Four gymnasts fell during their routines, including Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee of the United States, who were both expected to medal in the event, but ultimately did not make the podium.
Jumping Into L.A. 2028
In the jumping discipline of the equestrian competition, riders and their horses are timed as they leap over a series of obstacles. At the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, every obstacle is themed with French cultural references, from the Eiffel Tower to the Little Prince. The last obstacle is a bit different, though: It is dedicated to the next Summer Olympics, which will take place in Los Angeles in 2028. Here, the silver medalist, Steve Guerdat of Switzerland, and his horse, Dynamix de Belheme, are clearing that final jump.
A Grand Stage
The lavish Grand Palais played host to fencing when the Games began and has since transformed into the taekwondo venue. Athletes were introduced atop one of its grand staircases and descended to battle in the Nave, with its majestic glass ceiling. In this bronze-medal match, in the women’s 49-kilogram class, Lena Stojkovic of Croatia beat Merve Dincel Kavurat of Turkey, 2-0.
Women’s Street Skateboarding
Coco Yoshizawa, the Japanese 14-year-old, lands her last trick of the women’s street skateboarding final to cap her gold-medal performance. She followed her brother into the sport at age 7 and won bronze earlier this year at the World Skateboarding Tour Dubai.
Women’s 3-on-3 Basketball
Sonja Greinacher of Germany celebrates with her teammates after their gold-medal win in 3-on-3 basketball. Germany defeated Spain after Greinacher hit a 2-point shot with 30 seconds left to secure a 17-16 win.
Au Revoir, Paris
The beach volleyball athletes played in front of a steady stream of enthusiastic sellout crowds in the shadow of Paris’s most famous landmark. In the women’s quarterfinals, shown here, the Australian team of Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy defeated Switzerland’s Zoe Verge-Depre and Esmee Bobner, 21-19, 16-21, 15-12, on Aug. 6.
