Penelope, Robert, Johnny, and Cyril had shared a house in the country outside New Haven while they were all in graduate school. Now they are no longer in school, they're living in different apartments or have left the city. Penelope is living with a man named Dan but spends most of her time at Robert's apartment. They're not lovers but Robert is in love with her. Penelope gets stoned one night, calls Robert and frightens him with her irrationality. When they have lunch the next day, Penelope asks him if she can live with him and suggests they go to Colorado to stay with some friends of hers, Matthew and Bea Robert thinks the move is crazy but agrees to go. Both are smoking marijuana more frequently. When, they get to Colorado, Bea and Matthew are living together but have filed for a divorce. They have dinner but no one says much and Matthew drinks alot. The next day, Robert and Matthew go to the liquor store, Robert gets stoned and is more confused than ever.
