NASED and NAMLE Launch Free Election Communications Toolkit

For Immediate Release
September 8, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Association of State Election Directors (NASED) and the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) announce the release of a free toolkit on media literacy in elections for state, territorial, and local election officials.

“We’re excited to partner with NAMLE on this effort so members of the election community can benefit from their media literacy expertise when communicating with voters,” said Meagan Wolfe, NASED President and Administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission. “Proactive communication efforts can be overwhelming for election offices, especially smaller ones, and NASED is proud to help make it just a little bit easier.”

The toolkit contains customizable social media graphics and short videos for social media to encourage users to visit election office websites for more information.

“Understanding how to find reliable information is now a necessary skill for citizens in our democracy.  NAMLE is honored to be working with NASED to provide election officials the materials they need to help communicate the integrity of our electoral process,” said Tony Streit, NAMLE Board President.

The toolkit also includes brandable tip sheets that election officials can use to help explain to voters how to use media literacy principles to consume information about elections.

“There’s so much information out there about elections, it can be overwhelming to separate fact from fiction. Our goal with the tip sheets is to help election officials explain to voters what to look for when consuming information about elections,” said Wolfe.

“False and misleading information has real-life consequences.  Now, more than ever, media literacy is essential.  We must help every American develop media literacy skills to understand and respond to information about elections,” said Michelle Ciulla Lipkin, NAMLE’s Executive Director.

None of the resources are specific to 2022.  The Toolkit also includes sample social media posts election offices can use with each graphic, video, or tip sheet.  All materials will also be available in Spanish in the coming weeks.
