Paul J. Smith, MD, received his formal education in Houston, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry from Rice University, and earning his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his urology residency at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Smith joined Memorial Urology Associates in 2013.

Dr. Smith’s practice focuses primarily on robotic prostate cancer surgery, robotic kidney cancer surgery, enlarged prostate (BPH) and treatment of kidney stones. He also treats urologic conditions, such as voiding dysfunction, low testosterone and erectile dysfunction.

  • Robotic prostate cancer surgery: Dr. Smith offers an individualized surgical approach for cancer control and preservation of normal urinary and sexual functioning. Dr. Smith is one of a few prostate cancer surgeons in Houston performing Robotic Retzius-Sparing Prostatectomy, a leading-edge technique that dramatically improves urinary and sexual recovery compared to traditional robotic prostate removal.
  • Robotic kidney cancer surgery: Dr. Smith has also been a leader in the use of robotic surgery in treating kidney cancer, performing the first robotic partial nephrectomy at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital in 2014. Dr. Smith routinely performs this complex operation for kidney tumors to better preserve normal kidney function.
  • Enlarged Prostate (BPH): While many prostate issues are effectively managed by medication, Dr. Smith also offers the most advanced surgical treatments available, including minimally invasive outpatient procedures. Dr. Smith performs robotic simple prostatectomy, an effective solution for men with severely enlarged prostates, at both Memorial Hermann Memorial City and Memorial Hermann Katy Hospitals.
  • Kidney Stones (Nephrolithiasis): Dr. Smith performs all types of stone surgery, including non-invasive shockwave lithotripsy, digital ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy and percutaneous nephrostolithotomy. After the removal of bothersome stones, Dr. Smith focuses on individualized strategies for prevention of further stone formation.

Dr. Smith believes in an evidence-based practice of urology delivered with compassion. He appreciates the sensitive nature of urologic disease and therefore strives to deliver care with grace and understanding. In his leisure time, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with his wife, Dr. Neda Nosrati (cofounder of Village Dermatology) and their three children, playing the guitar and piano, exercising and traveling.
