Google Tightens AdSense Policies Reshaping Rules For Ad Placement

Google will replace the Ads on its dynamic content policy with “Ads in private communications” policy set to take effect in August, but the company this year also has made more than a handful of changes in AdSense to Ad Manager to AdMob.

The change for messaging apps is intended to provide clarity for publishers by explaining that ads are prohibited on screens where the primary focus is a private communication such as direct messages, live chats, video-chats, and private chatrooms.

These updates, Google explains, are part of its ongoing efforts to clarify its policies for readability and transparency.

Google in July expanded its EU User Consent Policy to apply to users in Switzerland. Companies using advertising products will be required to obtain Swiss users’ consent to the use of cookies or other local storage, where legally required.

The collection, sharing and use of personal data for personalization of ads also requires permission. This is in addition to existing requirements for European Economic Area (EEA) and UK users.

In March, Google made several changes AdSense for Search. It clarified that queries may originate from user search intent coming from either a search query submitted directly by a user into a search box without editing, modification or filtering.

The search box may not be pre-populated with search terms, and publishers may not create links containing pre-populated search terms.

But the most interesting change points to updates to the AdSense program policies based on a "Sensitive Event" that went into effect in February.

Google describes a "Sensitive Event" as an "unforeseen event or development that creates significant risk to Google's ability to provide high quality, relevant information and ground truth, and reduce insensitive or exploitative content in prominent and monetized features."

The company said that during a Sensitive Event, Google may take a variety of actions to address these risks, but did not specifically state the actions.
