'The Greer Citizen,' Weekly South Carolina Newspaper, Is Being Shuttered

The Greer Citizen, a weekly newspaper that has served the Upstate community in South Carolina since 1918, will publish its last issue on July 31.

“The national decline of print journalism and the corresponding community move from newspaper advertising to online outlets have made financial sustainability impossible, leading us to make this inevitable decision,” says staff writer William Buchheit, who is part of the Buchheit family, which owns the newspaper, in an announcement on the site.

There was no word on how many staffers would be affected.

The Greer Citizen was a family-oriented business that was purchased in 1920 by Publisher P.W. Smith. Smith’s sons Bill and Charles P. started out in in the print shop.

The paper was purchased by Tup Lucas in 1936, then sold to  Edd A. Burch in 1942. In 2006, it was purchased by Buchheit News Management.
