AP Is Creating A Charitable Entity To Raise Funds For Local Journalism

The Associated Press (AP) is launching a sister organization that will raise funds for state and local journalism.

The 501(c)3 charitable organization will help AP fund entities that share a commitment to state and local news. It will be overseen by an independent board of directors.

AP has been working for more than five years to provide philanthropic support to augment its journalism.

The news service has formed content-sharing collaborations with several nonprofit news outlets, including CalMatters, The Texas Tribune, South Dakota News Watch and Honolulu Civil Beat and others, approaching the 2024 presidential election.

“The crisis in local news is only exacerbating,” says Daisy Veerasingham, AP president and CEO. “It’s AP’s role as the cooperative at the heart of the news ecosystem to both reinforce our own state and local reporting as well as support other organizations who share our commitment to local journalism.”
