Dear Colleagues,
The Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age are three periods of human history characterized by the way people made tools. At present, we are surrounded by plastics (polymers), and therefore it is possible that we are living in the plastic (polymer) age.
Polymers are widely used in many areas such as manufacturing, research and development, and other disciplines (e.g., tissue engineering). Polymers have become an important pillar for the development of scaffolds in different medical specializations due to their easy handling, biocompatibility and biodegradability. Innovative solutions between a natural and/or synthetic polymer’s synergy with bioactive molecules seem to be attractive and closer to emulating the different biological microenvironments and biomechanics of tissues in vivo. In this sense, tissue engineering demands advanced specific polymeric properties to face new challenges and achieve higher goals with probable clinical applications. Therefore, the synthesis and characterization of macromolecules and new materials for the design and elaboration of scaffolds is of importance to human beings, and its discussion is welcome in this Special Issue.

Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
