Most combined cycle plants were designed for base-load service, but due to the increase in renewable generation, many gas-turbine assets are forced to cycle and/or to follow load for a large portion of their fired hours. More cycles and faster ramps are known to adversely affect the health of HRSGS, but what are the biggest problem areas? 1 gigawatt (GW). Few people appreciate how much power this is. To fully understand this unit, we must first visualize its immensity. You’ve probably seen the news: Europe’s largest solar farm has 0.6 GW peak capacity (Leipzig, Germany). UK’s current operational BESS capacity is 4.6 GW (June 2024). China added 301 GW of renewable capacity in 2023. … But how much power is 1 GW, really? Let’s use an example: The Energy Olympics Paris 2024 showcased some amazing feats of human performance. Not least of which were the Olympic rowers. A top Olympic rower generates about 500 watts. Now let’s imagine Olympic rowers power your home. How many would you need? A washing machine uses about 500 watts during its cycle. 1 Olympian. A typical toaster uses 1000 watts. 2 more Olympians. Fancy a tea? 3 more are required to run a kettle. You would need a full team laboring at full-race speed. That’s between 5-10 rowers to power one average home in Germany. Day after day. Now, let's think bigger. Much bigger. One gigawatt is 1 billion watts. This is enough power for a medium-sized city. i.e., ~400,000 to 800,000 German homes. To reach 1 GW, we'd need to mobilize 2 million Olympic rowers. That’s as if the entire population of Vienna started rowing… at an Olympic pace. After one hour, ~900 million calories would be burnt. That’s equal to 9 million bananas. It would take 44 fully loaded trucks to deliver them. Hour after hour. So, how can we tackle humanity’s thirst for power? The answer is where we started. Large-scale renewables roll-out. A single large wind turbine can generate 6 MW. That's like 12,000 rowers. The largest wind farms in the world today can have more than 1 GW capacity. This shows the immense scale of our energy needs and production. It highlights why renewable sources like wind and solar are so crucial. As Icon of The Seas makes history as the largest cruise ship to sail, questions are still not being answered as to the true environmental impact of all the 'new' renewable fuels. This time, LNG. LNG 'burns cleaner' but it leaks even more harmful GHG's into the environment AND you need to burn more of it for the same power produced, so is it really cleaner? Methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. "It's a step in the wrong direction," Bryan Comer, director of the Marine Programme at the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. "We would estimate that using LNG as a marine fuel emits over 120% more life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions than marine gas oil," he said. Earlier this week, the ICCT released a report arguing that methane emissions from LNG-fuelled ships were higher than current regulations assumed. Methanol has an energy density of less than half that of HFO meaning you need to burn twice as much to go the same distance, and it costs the environment more to produce even before you burn it! Let's not even get started on Ammonia or Hydrogen in 2040, or maybe 2050.... Let's not burn more of less efficient fuels and create different problems just because big industry wants to sell new engines, let's start by making the most energy efficent fuels burn better and with less polution, today, for free. The Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) has been preparing for the 2024 Monaco Boat Challenge and they were recently able to reveal the project they have been developing, a pontoon which is capable of hydrogen refueling. This pontoon was developed through a collaboration between (YCM) and SBM Offshore. The challenge will be held between the 1st and 7th of July 2024 and it will be the 11th Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. The challenge plans to use a pontoon which is able to fill thirty cylinders, whilst also supplying eight teams with green hydrogen. The article below highlights that it is not only huge ships and large companies which are making the switch to hydrogen as a fuel source. By using this alternative fuel source for racing boats, it portrays that even recreational activities can have an impact on the environment and it is important to pay attention to that industry as well. It’s not just the government investing in hydrogen technology. The DOE expects its $7 billion investment to be met with the H2Hubs selectees’ cost share of more than $40 billion. The DOE also says tax incentives in the Inflation Reduction Act, and ongoing research and development efforts across the Federal government, will help drive private-sector investment in clean hydrogen. There’s, quite frankly, a lot of optimism surrounding hydrogen.
