And ETFs catering to flavor-of-the-month themes are less likely to stand the test of time.

Index funds. They're a pretty common investment term, but what are they? In simple terminology, an index fund is a type of mutual or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the performance of a specific market benchmark and seeks to mimic that performance. Index funds are usually comprised of stocks or bonds that try to replicate a specific investment area of the market. A great example of an index fund would be the S&P 500 Index, which is a "market-capitalization-weighted index" of 500 large, publicly traded companies in the U.S. The ultimate goal of an index fund is to get the value of investment returns at a relatively lower cost than other forms of active investing.
