Getting started with Programmable Voice with Asterisk. (Is hard but worth it) Here are the three things you will need: 1. Learn how to configure the SIP stack 2. Learn about Asterisk's dialplan 3. Learn the Asterisk REST interface (ARI) and Stasis 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟭: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗜𝗣 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 The signaling config happens in the 𝘱𝘫𝘴𝘪𝘱.𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧 file. And the 𝘱𝘫𝘴𝘪𝘱_𝘸𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘳𝘥.𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘧 file. These files will allow you to: - Define the entry point to the dialplan - Setup the connections to the PSTN - Configure the transport protocol - Configuring authentication - Select the codecs - Enable DTMF 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟮: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸'𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 The dialplan will match incoming calls with the Stasis. Which, in turn, will pass control to your custom code. Here is a breakdown of the example dialplan line-by-line: Line 1: Sets the name of the context Line 2: Matches incoming calls to the extension Line 3: Passes control to your application Line 4: Hangs up the call 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝟯: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗔𝗥𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀 Here is where all the magic happens. 2025 is looming! 🤔 As BT Openreach stops selling legacy lines and upgrades to a further 40 telephone exchange areas, isn't it time to think about a move to IP telephony? The switch off of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) scheduled for 2025 in the UK will affect analogue and ISDN call recording systems and phone systems as they will no longer be compatible with the new IP-based network. Legacy Retell systems that use Sense hardware (ISDN 2, ISDN 30 and analogue) may need to be replaced with Sense IP call recording software. 🤔 This transition need not be costly as Sense can record SIP extensions, meaning that if your organisation needs to record certain small departments or individuals, there will be no need to record all trunk lines!
