Juneteenth celebrates the day in 1865 when Union forces arrived in Galveston, Texas and proclaimed that all enslaved people were officially free. This occurred over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Although Juneteenth is a commemoration of independence and liberty, it also serves as an awareness of the prolonged and devastating history of slavery and systemic racism in the United States.
