Funding opportunity to support self-care through a sabbatical program. These sabbatical grants, offered by the Meyer Foundation, are designed to promote deep rest by enabling organizers, frontline staff, senior staff, and executive directors of organizations to take a step away from their jobs, rest, and engage in activities that will renew their mind, body, and spirit. This opportunity is particularly valuable for frontliners, organizers, directors, researchers, and other dedicated individuals who face daily challenges, whether in the field (online or offline) or in their offices, within their home countries or in exile. Their work is crucial for reclaiming space, fighting for better regimes, and advocating for the economic, social, political, and cultural rights, especially for those who need to fight representing groups/communities that lack of representation and/or are under constant attack. The philanthropic sector asks its partners/grantees about their strategies’ sustainability, robustness and resilience. These are critical considerations for making financial decisions with potential field-wide implications. When evaluating how to allocate resources for building and reinforcing mechanisms that provide safety and security, it’s crucial to assess how effectively the chosen strategies impact the protection ecosystem, how they address key levers of change, and strengthen weak points. However, it is equally important when doing those evaluations, actors in the philanthropic sector implement a holistic view of their partners/grantees’ conditions — how effectively they can build and implement strategies, and whether they have the necessary support (including and) beyond just financial resources. Programs like sabbaticals, which offer time for rest and renewal, should inspire the philanthropic sector. By providing such opportunities, we not only support individual well-being but also contribute to the overall sustainability and resilience of the protection ecosystem. EJ - A new way to frame an age-old concept. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Whatever you do unto the least of my brethren... Not difficult concepts to grasp and concepts we can all agree upon. Environmental Justice is simply a framework within which we can live up to that paradigm. Perhaps "simply" is not the right word; that's because identifying, defining, and managing environmental impacts within a complex world full of billions of people is anything but simple. EJ is often viewed as the new elephant in the room. So... how do you eat an elephant? Here's a link to an article that introduces a step-wise process for understanding and addressing that elephant in bite-size chunks and turning it to our societal advantage. The FISH Team want to pause to say thank you to the many quiet supporters who make our work possible ! You know who you are...... FISH does not rely on government funding to enable us to achieve our mission of improving the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and breaking intergenerational cycles of trauma, poverty and engagement in the justice system. Our majority Aboriginal led Board are focussed on listening and hearing the voices of our Elders, Leaders, families and communities and then acting to bring their wisdom and direction into on the ground action. We know what to do to bring real lasting positive change, which often is not inline with government funding priorities or policy, but often we do not know how it will be achieved but we know what we are doing is right in bringing about positive long term sustainable change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their families and their community. From home ownership, to bringing structural reform, healing and hope in the justice system, to sharing positive stories, through to innovative medical technologies. We continue to listen, hear and act ! None of this work would be possible without the many people, organisations, businesses, foundations and individuals who walk shoulder to shoulder with FISH - Foundation for Indigenous Sustainable Health in enabling us to fulfil our mission and for this we thank you. Yesterday, I attended the 26th annual “Cause Conference” put on by Cause San Diego. It was incredibly inspiring to learn about the pressing needs of our community, witness the great work of local nonprofits, and see the support nonprofits are getting from conscientious businesses. The meta-message I formulated from my experience is that we are all interconnected across the globe. Our actions might seem to be in a microcosm, but their impacts actually ripple and expand beyond our comprehension, across the globe, and to the billions of fellow humans and countless other life forms on our planet. These actions ultimately come back to impact those of us who committed them — one way or another, for better or worse. Some businesses choose to operate in a “zero-sum-game” mode, exploiting precious resources for their short-term gain and aggregating wealth for the very few, regardless of what negative impacts this may have on countless others. Conversely, other businesses choose the “infinite-sum-game” mode, where negative impacts on others are minimized or eliminated, wealth gains are equitably distributed, and everyone benefits. Maybe we could call that the “trickle-up theory” of economics. When everyone is lifted, the entire economy is lifted, and businesses can't help but benefit too. This is only fair. Businesses rely on publicly funded infrastructure and social welfare structures as much as individuals do, and therefore should not gain a wildly disproportionate share of the benefit from these structures, while paying little or nothing to support them. We're all part of the same community, locally, nationally, and globally. We all have to take care of each other to thrive in the long term.
