Are you a secretly insecure leader? When professional sports teams make it to the playoffs in their respective sports a very interesting strategy comes into effect: They always make sure they have people on their team who have significant playoff experience at the very top levels. Those people are usually not the best players on the team, but they serve a significant role going forward. Do you have people on your team who have already climbed Mount Everest? Do you have people on your team who have played at the very top levels of your industry and have been extremely successful? Nine out of 10 corporate teams do not. The reason may surprise you, but it is spot on. #talent #teameffectiveness #couragetolead

What do you value most in your employees, co-workers, family and friends? The answer for me is consistency. A close second is consistency’s cousin – dependability. These aren’t very sexy traits. The football equivalent of consistency and dependability is a quarterback who is a game manager. Game managers show up and get the job done without a lot of fanfare. They’re consistent and you can depend on them. I annually watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs. There may not be a more physically taxing tournament to win in professional sports. In the end, the stars usually outshine everyone else. But it’s impossible to win the Stanley Cup without third and fourth-line grinders who show up every night and are hard to play against. They are accountable for themselves and to their teammates. There’s a famous quote by Aristotle: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” I think it’s really hard to be dependable without being consistent. I created a whole list of goals for 2024 back at the beginning of the year. I don’t know that I’ve ever been as consistent with following through on my goals as I have been this year. It’s been a difference-maker for me and I’m looking forward to continuing my journey with consistency the rest of this year.
