New York Climate Week: Celebrating Champions of Nature and Climate Action! In the quest to mitigate social, nature, and climate crises, many leaders go above and beyond, tirelessly advocating for change and making strides in sustainable practices. Today, I want to highlight a standout leader in this vital fight: ROSELYN FOSUAH ADJEI As the Director of the Climate Change Directorate at the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Roselyn embodies the spirit of dedication and perseverance. Her pivotal work in reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation champions forest conservation as a cornerstone of broader environmental efforts, underscoring its vital role even in a complex market landscape. The rate of deforestation and degradation continues at an alarming pace, overshadowing the slower—and much needed—advancements in other areas of environmental conservation. Despite this challenge, leaders like Roselyn are bringing high-integrity forest conservation back to the forefront, emphasizing robust biodiversity and integrating core social benefits. Here's to more visionaries like Roselyn, with special hats off to Eron Bloomgarden, Leonardo das Neves Carvalho, @Francisca Arara, and Eliane Xunakalo, for their determined commitment to our planet's health and leadership that inspires us all to strive for a sustainable and equitable world. #Leadership #Sustainability #ClimateAction #ForestConservation #REDD+ #CCB #EnvironmentalProtection Herbert Alexander von Uslar Stefanie Kaiser Marco Rosa Carlos Luiz Guedes Neto Luiz Tonisi Murillo Aragão Thiago de Aragao Mathias Meharez Thiago Batista Amintas Brandão Jr., PhD Pieter do Amaral Patricia Vasques Monaliza Conrado Ju Mesquita Marcelo P. 🌲🌍 On this International Day of Forests, we at Grad are renewing our commitment to preserving our precious forest ecosystem. For some time now, we have decided to stop importing and selling exotic woods, which have been the subject of much controversy. Our choice stems from a profound desire to promote responsible and sustainable practices. These exotic woods were often associated with poor management of forest plots, ethical problems linked to the work of local populations and the environmental destruction of protected species. We have therefore chosen to give preference to FSC or PEFC certified board supplier partners, thus guaranteeing that our products come from responsible sources that respect the environment. But our commitment doesn't stop there. We are aware of the challenges facing our forests, and we are acting accordingly. That's why we've decided to provide financial support for a reforestation project in the Vosges, aimed at restoring a plot of land affected by the bark beetle. This concrete action reflects our commitment to preserving biodiversity and combating the harmful effects of climate change. On this day dedicated to our forests, let's remember just how essential they are to our well-being and the health of our planet. Let's commit together to protecting and preserving them for future generations. 🌳💚 #InternationalForestDay #EnvironmentalSustainability #SaveOurForests #gradsystem #Cladding #Decking #Ceiling

As the crucial biodiversity summit of COP16 approaches, we're joining with Campaign for National Parks, National Trust, RSPB and others to demand a new deal for National Parks which which will deliver a nature-rich future. The UK is committed to protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030. But according to the latest estimates, the amount of land in England that is effectively protected for nature has fallen to just 2.93%. Our National Parks cover 10% of our land and are full of beautiful landscapes with huge potential for natural revival. By repairing and protecting carbon-capturing peat bogs, ancient forests, flower-rich grasslands and ecologically vital lakes and rivers, National Parks can kickstart the urgently-needed revival of the nation's biodiversity. In an open letter to environment secretary Steve Reed, we call for the UK to show global leadership by realising a vision for wilder, greener, and more accessible National Parks. NEW PAPER: Resisting the carbonization of animals as climate solutions Overstating wild animal roles in carbon capture may hinder, rather than facilitate, effective climate-mitigation and conservation efforts, say researchers, Ethan Duvall, Elizabeth le Roux, Heidi Pearson, Joe Roman, Yadvinder Malhi and Andrew Abraham in an article out today in nature climate. The two greatest environmental challenges of our time are global climate change and biodiversity loss, and it is attractive to look for synergies that can address both these challenges. This has generated support for nature-based solutions to climate change which, until recently, have largely focused on vegetation restoration and tree planting. However, there are increasing news stories circulating on how conserving and restoring large animal wildlife, such as elephants and whales, can absorb carbon and bring climate change mitigation benefits. This sounds very attractive: potential carbon could bolster much-needed funding for conservation and rewilding. What’s not to like? In this opinion piece in Nature Climate Change we inject a voice of caution into this story. The science around wildlife providing climate benefits is generally weak and very context-dependent – in many cases animal wildlife like savanna elephants may reduce carbon stocks. Many widely reported studies are modelling studies which incompletely capture the many ecological processes at play – actual convincing field-based evidence is very rare – yet such studies get a disproportionate amount of media attention. We show there is very selecting media reporting of the minority of studies that suggest climate benefits of animal wildlife. There is a real danger that claimed climate benefits may not exist, leading to backlash and discrediting of otherwise creditable conservation and rewilding schemes when paid-for carbon benefits do not emerge. Many vibrant ecosystems such as savannas and grasslands can have lower carbon stocks than similar ecologically degraded ecosystems. And excessive focus on carbon can encourage bioperverse outcomes, such as reducing animal wildlife abundance where it is seen to negatively impact carbon stocks. There are both practical and moral dangers around excessive “carbonization” of wildlife that we need to be alert to. Read the piece here: https://lnkd.in/e5e5UZn9

Australia is home to some of the world's most unique ecosystems, but our biodiversity is under serious threat. Habitat destruction, climate change, and invasive species continue to accelerate the extinction of iconic species such as the Koala and lesser known but equally important species. While strategies such as the Federal Government's Threatened Species Action Plan 2022-2032 show promise, we must consider whether these strategies are sufficient to prevent extinction and restore ecosystems. Are we investing enough in Indigenous-led conservation, which aligns ecological restoration and cultural wisdom? This is a crucial time for governments, businesses, and individuals to reevaluate how we combine economic growth and environmental stewardship. What can we do as citizens and professionals to advocate for stronger policies and community-based solutions? Let's start a conversation about practical strategies to protect our natural heritage before it is too late.

Life on land : " Protecting the foundation of our planet" Earth life is the cornerstone of our planet’s ecosystem and the key to human survival. Earth’s ecosystems, ranging from forests and grasslands to deserts and wetlands, provide vital resources such as food, water and oxygen that support countless species and maintain environmental balance, however they are on the verge of extinction. Deforestation, habitat destruction, climate change and pollution are some of the challenges that threaten life on earth. Forests covering 31% of the land area are being cleared at an alarming rate for agricultural and urban development, causing habitat loss and ecological degradation Land degradation and desertification cause agricultural crops and further jeopardizes safe water supplies, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. Sustainable practices such as reforestation, wildlife conservation and appropriate land use planning are crucial to protect life on earth. Government, organizations and individuals need to work together to reduce deforestation, promote biodiversity and restore degraded ecosystems. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 emphasizes the importance of conserving earth’s biodiversity and halting biodiversity loss. conclusion Protecting life on earth is essential to the health of our planet and future generations. By prioritizing conservation and sustainable practices, we can ensure that the Earth remains a thriving home for all species. Now let’s work to protect and restore our planet’s beautiful terrestrial heritage. blog link : https://lnkd.in/gt5j7qbB
