The  latest in our “Powered by Talent” series features Joshua Zike, an active duty U.S. Coast Guard officer who serves as the senior service lead  to DIU and is a  program manager within the autonomy portfolio. In this Q&A, Zike shares his favorite parts of working at DIU, including  “a whole team of people looking for ways to get to yes,” and recent project successes. “I'm driven by a desire to make things better for those out in the field, on the water, or in the skies. Today is National #HireaVeteranDay, and as a veteran-run organization, we’d like to highlight some of the unique qualities that servicemembers can bring to the workplace. 👇 LEADERSHIP- Serving in the military shapes you to be a leader by offering unique opportunities to be in charge of personnel and high value government equipment, often at a young age. TEAMWORK- The @USArmy is often referred to as “the world’s greatest team.” Military service often requires you to overcome huge challenges by working with your fellow servicemembers, setting you up for success on any team in the workplace. WORK ETHIC- Employers want to hire hard workers and serving in the military is hard work. Having a strong work ethic is an invaluable quality and sets employees apart in the workplace. INTEGRITY- Servicemembers sign up to protect the American people, and that’s no small task. It requires a significant amount of integrity to voluntarily put others before yourself in order to protect our country. Leadership, teamwork, work ethic, and integrity are just a few of the unique qualities that veterans can bring to the workplace. Serving in the military grows you as a person which inevitably grows you as a professional. On National #HireaVeteranDay, take time to think about how a veteran could benefit your workplace.

Great news! I am please to say that I have been nominated for the Military Values in Business award by the British Ex-Forces in Business Awards. It looks like a tough field given some of the other nominees but it's exciting times for Spot Ship and me! Applying military values to Spot Ship has been one of the things that has really supercharged us as a company and given us a huge competitive edge; enabling us to iterate, develop and deploy software that is more accurate and more user centric in an increasingly competitive space. There's no stopping Spot Ship, and James will testify to the brilliance of applying the manoeuvrist approach to business, delegating until you feel uncomfortable and then delegating some more, and applying levels of trust to the team that you wouldn't see in many other companies. Results are mid June, but just to be nominated is fantastic. Anyone who has ever served in the Military will tell you there are one or two assignments in their career that truly shape who they are as a leader or team member. Personally, those two assignments were both overseas. 2015-2018 Vicenza, Italy: This assignment was difficult; however, I was able to surround myself with amazing leaders who fostered my confidence as a Soldier, leader, and professional. Their trust I had to earn, which in turn increased my confidence. I was able to take their at times limited guidance or requests and execute these missions at a high level using personal skills I didn't know I possessed. While this was before my reclass to Counterintelligence, the skills I developed made me a better Counterintelligence Agent. 2020: Iraq: This deployment was interesting because I was separated from my team for most of it. I had to leverage the skills I learned during logistic negotiations with Italians to negotiate with Iraqis. I was trusted to do my job, with no direct oversight, and my results proved I was worthy of my leader's trust. These assignments have two things in common. One: I was given trust from my leadership in both. Regardless of what I did or didn't do, my own success and failures were up to me. When I made mistakes, I was educated and when I succeeded, I was rewarded with more trust. Two: I did not think I was ready for each of these positions. I was given these opportunities and shaped myself into who I needed to be to be successful. Sometimes in life all we need is someone to trust us and give us an opportunity to be successful, regardless of are background.

I know Jesse Cole loves to study Walt Disney, and it shows. There's a lesser-known story about Walt and Disneyland's souvenir book. Apparently, someone had suggested that they raise the price of those books because they were barely breaking even on them. Walt refused and insisted that the point was for people to buy them, take them home, and place them on their coffee table. That way, when they had company, their friends would see the book and begin thumbing through it. They'd see the pictures and think, "That looks fun. We should take our family to Disneyland." The Bananas are doing the 21st-century version of this philosophy. In a world of sizzle reel commercials for live events, they release full TikToks of moments in their games. They broadcast the games for free on YouTube. Even the owner posts his own personal insights on LinkedIn. What's happening is people are seeing this fantastic experience and thinking, "That looks fun. We should take our family to the Bananas when they visit town." That's a big reason they're selling out Major League ballparks and will continue growing. When kids in LA can't watch a Dodger game because of rights and restrictions, they can easily watch the Bananas for free online. Study the best. Learn from the best. Be the best.

You never really leave.... Because even when you’re gone, you bring the good and the bad parts of your service with you. Things that I’ve seen come out of the defence force that have positively impacted Neptune Holding Group Pty Ltd and are reason I believe for the consideration of hiring veterans whenever you can; Veterans will always demonstrate discipline and skills from service that are innate to the culture they come from. Mission focus, planning, and adaptability are often key for expanding in the security field. So why wouldn’t you want these qualities? Trust is everything in life, let alone security. A veteran background can help build a reputation for reliability and ethical conduct simply because their history requires them to have each others backs Improvise, Adapt and Overcome.... how many times have you heard it? You’ve heard it that much because it’s repeated for effect as it is effective. By employing a veteran, businesses can use their experiences to drive growth, build client trust, and keep improving. A great day and timely reminder that transformation is happening everywhere. As an accredited JOSCAR supplier we listened to CEO’s of companies such as Lockheed Martin talk about the 10000 job vacancies across the UK defence sector. They need young talent in places where they don’t really want to live. They need many more women in tech. They need innovative suppliers bringing genuine ideas and solutions. And with us now living in a troubled world they need suppliers who can scale up quickly if and when needed.
