UK introduces new legislation on crew harassment prevention Among the wide ranging subjects discussed in last month’s ESTELA Breakfast Seminar https://lnkd.in/dvNgYAd3 on crew careers, retention and well-being, was the area of crew harassment at work. Superyacht lawyer and Partner at Keystone Law, Benjamin Maltby, has written for Superyacht News on the impact of amendments to the UK’s Equality legislation coming into force in October 2024. Maltby sets out how the amended Equality Act covers yachts flagged in the UK, or in an EEA member state, or operating in British or adjacent waters, or crewed by British or EEA member nationals. This interesting article explains the renewed onus on owners to take “reasonable steps” to prevent sexual harassment and where tribunal thresholds may come into play. There is guidance on employment policy, HR practices, training, risk assessment and reporting. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/dQyd-Kct

Safety Week is here with the theme "Every Voice Matters". Everyday when you walk onto a jobsite, you know what's on the line: the work, a reputation and a paycheck. But most importantly what's really on the line are the lives and livelihood of every person on the job site. The risks are real. Your work, your focus and the choices you make have real consequences for everyone around you. When you enter this amazing industry, you join a unique community where everyone knows – no questions asked – that you have each other’s back. This is the commitment you make, based on the respect you have for each other and the risks associated with the work you do. Safety is the foundation that holds the industry together. Safety Week is our opportunity to recognize the promise we made when we accepted this job, and the immense responsibility that comes with it. To make absolutely certain we do whatever it takes to send everyone home safely every day. Click the link to access resources and more valuable information! https://ow.ly/lQRk50RxiBC #ConstructionSafetyWeek #Construction #HHCA #SafetyFirst

Young workers are at greater risk when they start a new job. Typical reasons why they are injured include: 1. Inexperience. 2. Lack of training, orientation, and supervision. 3. Lack of understanding of their workplace. 4. Lack of preparation for the workplace. 5. Exposure to more dangerous jobs and equipment. 6. Hesitancy to ask questions. If you have young workers in your circle, please talk to them about safety. Let them know it is their right to be provided comprehensive workplace safety training AND supervision. Sadly, Tim Hamilton was NOT provided any safety training for his summer job. He died on the job. His mother, Julie Hamilton, has created this helpful website for parents/guardians of working youth. Visit missingtim.com for safety tips for young workers. #safetyfirst #Safetyforemployees #youngworkers #youngworkersafety #SafetyForEveryone

Professional Workplace Safety Coach & Trainer | The Safety Geek Podcast Host | VPP Expert | Safety Culture Specialist
Every day is an opportunity to be better, right? When we immerse ourselves frequently in the things that challenge us, we learn to face them better. We transition and adapt, and then we move forward and find new tasks or situations that call us to overcome as our safety career progresses. Think of it as baby steps toward our main goal: an effective safety program for the company not to mention the experience earned in the process that we can use as we make out way to the C-Suite position. #safetygeek #safetymanagement #safetyculture #healthandsafety #safetyinfluencer #safetymanager #safetycommitment #impostersyndrome

There is a famous quote that goes around: hurt people hurt other people. Among the many conversations I have with my dear friend Coach Danica, Manifestation Master and CEO 🇵🇭🦋✨️ is that self-mastery is public service. Believe it or not, with all the narratives about narcissists/NPD, one of the patterns is that they have gone through severe trauma… and that trauma basically became their villain origin story. I love Katherine Pomfret’s comment here: When people seek to improve things, they seek to improve things for themselves. I once read a quote (I will cite later if I find it again) that went a bit like this (NV): people don’t quite care about your story—they care about going through the same thing and not feeling quite as alone. Even for empaths and others who allow abuse to happen, deep inside, intrinsically, it has more to do with identifying with the brokenness of the other, and in so seeking their repair, we feel that that would repair the brokenness within. All that to say—people are broken in similar ways. We are all more connected than we care to think, and it matters to rediscover that connection. It is for this reason I speak with the same warmth and respect to farmers, “people at the margins” (as Pope Francis would describe them), politicians, celebrities, C-level people, etc. I do not care about labels, because everybody, at their core, is human. If your default program is respect and a recognition of universal worth, would you need to care about “who” someone is and what they have? Probably not. But it’s a bit hard for others to understand that, because the root and core of classism, racism, and all forms of bigotry is external validation seeking behaviors. What others fail to realize is that this exclusionary behavior at the end of the day is inclusion-seeking behavior—it is validation-seeking behavior coming from internal pain. So… yes, self-mastery is a huge public service. You get to show people possibilities and how things can be done differently. But it requires bravery, boldness, and inner resilience, and sadly to build that requires undergoing a painful process most people aren’t ready for.
And as Workers' Day comes to an end, I reflect once again on a favorite quote by Toni Morrison: “I tell my students, 'When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else. This is not just a grab-bag candy game.” Read it in passing for the first time like 10 years ago while tangentially researching a whole other topic, and it's just never left me. Looks like it's shaping up so that I have practically the same experience with Katherine Pomfret's "Security is yourself" and "Any craftsperson knows that the process is the result." Happy Labour Day! #labourday #HappyWorkersDay #Work #Live

It's the day after the Day of Mourning. One week to Safety and Health Week. College students have wrapped up exams and are looking ahead to summer jobs. There couldn't be a more important time to highlight young worker safety. Whether it's a family member, friend or a young worker you're hiring, take the time to talk to them about workplace safety. There are lots of resources out there to help begin that potentially life saving conversation. https://lnkd.in/eEM2e7GF https://lnkd.in/eNpqs-4S

These are hard statistics - and alarming to say the least. However, the safety fraternity doesn’t take into account “near hits.” For the record, the industry likes to sugar coat the term “near hit” with the term “near miss.” If the safety fraternity counted “near hits” related to hydraulics they would see that tens and thousands of workers “almost” get injured or killed every day in America. That’s why it’s better for them to ignore the elephant in the room. It’s just as well that safety supervisors and managers steer clear of my classroom when I teach hydraulic safety at their plants. If they sat in and listened to workers’ accounts about how they narrowly escaped injury or death, they would be horrified. On second thoughts, maybe not because most safety supervisors don’t have a clue about hydraulic safety. But, in their defense, since hydraulics has yet to be recognized as an occupational hazard by state and federal agencies, there is no need to be concerned.

At IWCD, we recognize that young and new workers may face higher risks on the job due to inexperience and a lack of training. That's why we make it a priority to provide thorough, 1-hour+ safety orientations before they ever step onto a worksite. This training ensures that every worker understands workplace rights, hazards, and safety responsibilities from day one.We follow the regulations outlined by the Workers Compensation Act and WorkSafe BC, pairing young workers with experienced mentors who provide direct supervision. Our Start Cards are critical to this process, helping us assess hazards and ensure that new workers understand all safety measures. We also foster an environment where young workers are encouraged to ask questions and raise concerns. Together, we’re committed to reducing incidents and keeping everyone safe on-site. #IWCDSafetyFirst #YoungWorkerSafety #BuildingResponsibly
