☀ As the summer comes into view, especially with the Olympics in France, we would expect to see an uptick in international arrivals into Europe. Sure enough, total transatlantic bizjet flights from the US to Europe are up by 5% this month, and into France up by 26%. 🏖 We’d expect the high-end tourist demand to be a strong stimulus for the European charter market, lifting a sector which has otherwise sagged this year. “I’m leaving on that midnight plane to Georgia….” Admittedly we’re talking air not rail and the flights in question depart at lunchtime, but why let a couple of words get in the way of a catchy lyric and a classic tune. The news that #easyJet is launching a twice weekly service from #Lutonairport to the Georgian capital #Tbilisi in 2025 came as a wake-up call to those who believed the geographical expansion of European boundaries low-cost aviation had reached its zenith. The fact that #britishairways have simultaneously announced their own service from Heathrow testifies to the growth potential of this hitherto largely untapped market. To me the addition of a new country to the orange map is always something to celebrate. I’ve long believed that #easyJet (and to be fair its low-cost competitors) have played an important and understated role in bringing the disparate community of European nations closer together. Through opening up affordable opportunities to travel they have enabled tens, if not hundreds, of millions of the continent’s citizens to forge new friendships, develop business opportunities and to understand and appreciate our varied culture, cuisine and history Beyond tourism and business, sports fans and lovers of the arts also stand to benefit from the new links. Georgia has long punched above its weight in Europe’s premier football and rugby competitions while a mid-table finish in the 2024 #Eurovision (sponsored by easyJet!) underscores the nation’s cultural credentials. Which may be stretching things a bit but starting and ending this post on a musical note has a certain circularity about it! #airlines [opinions expressed are my own and do not represent those of any other individual or organisation]

🚀✈🚁 Delta Air Lines Echoes Air France Olympics to Hit Bottom Line ✈🚁 ▪️Delta Air Lines Airlines has added its voice to the growing chorus of concerns about the economic impact of the Paris Olympics. Echoing similar sentiments expressed by Air France weeks ago, Delta Air Lines has announced that it expects to incur significant financial losses due to the global sporting event. ▪️The airline attributes its projected losses to increased operational costs, heightened competition for resources, and potential disruptions to flight schedules. However, a deeper issue may be at play. The surge in prices across France, a consequence of various economic factors, seems to have deterred many tourists from visiting Paris this summer. ▪️While the event is anticipated to bring economic benefits to Paris, the broader impact on the tourism sector and airlines remains a cause for concern.

My former direct report at Swiss International Air Lines, Annette Mann, now CEO of Austrian Airlines has to deal with claims from the union that are far off economic realities, especially in the airline business. Annette's approach to these challenges demonstrates incredible leadership skills. It's not just about the economics; it's about fostering a culture of resilience, candid dialogue, and long-term thinking. Her commitment to the success of Austrian Airlines should serve as an inspiration not only to the AUA team but also to the broader Austrian citizens, politics, and economy. Annette's resilience in navigating these challenges is impressive. Her approach is a testament to her deep commitment to the airline's future and stands as a model of strong leadership. A level of commitment that, unfortunately, the union does not seem to share. #Leadership #Aviation #Resilience #staystrong

One of the great obstacles in tourism is the means to travel, or in other words how easy is it to access the destination you promote. In the case of #israeltourism it is dramatic as the main entry gate is our national airport #bengurionairport. Due to the current situation many of the international carriers seized operation due to lack of demand, high cost of insurance and for some even political agendas. I was asked to explain this over the national broadcast. I talked about the importance of encouraging the foreign aviation companies to restart their operation to Israel, by public relations and providing incentives with emphasis on low-cost carriers and the US major airlines as the demand is growing. I am not totally sure that it was because of me, but yesterday #UnitedAirlines announced that they are coming back to Israel on the first week of March, and #deltaairlines is planning to do the same in May. The Netherlands #KLM announced on returning in April and #Lufthansa is increasing its existing schedule in 50%! all in all, great news for the inbound tourism which we hope will start bouncing back in the second quarter of 2024.
