ICYMI: #DidYouNOAA that one of the original trailblazers of hyperbaric chamber medicine and dive training is part of the NOAA family? For decades, Dick Rutkowski treated hundreds of divers with decompression sickness in one of NOAA's very first hyperbaric chambers. 🏊♀️ Many of these divers conducted research in the HYDROLAB, an undersea research habitat where aquanauts could live on the ocean floor for days or weeks at a time. When it was time to return to dry land, aquanauts would have to spend at least 16 hours in hyperbaric treatment to avoid getting decompression sickness. Listen to Dick's account of the HYDROLAB, NOAA's early Man-in-the-Sea program and hyperbaric medicine as part of our #OceanMonth edition of the #PlanetNOAA Podcast: https://lnkd.in/e2EuuARp #OceanMonthNOAA
