It’s fair to say this post has sparked some debate! For what it’s worth, I believe that acknowledgement of distinguished service at the highest/state level is important and should be encouraged and applauded. My unease with the recent honours list is not that I think CFOs are undeserving of the award, but how poorly all the other fabulous, dedicated, and hard-working staff are represented. In summary: I don’t necessarily want to see less CFOs on there, but I do 100% want to see a greater representation of the diversity of ranks and roles and people the Service employs. I wanted to check whether this most recent list was a one-off in terms of representation and discovered the following: In England and Wales alone, between June 2019 – June 2024, a total of 51 Q/KFSMs have been awarded, of which 30 have been for current or recently-retired CFOs (59% of the total). CFOs do not represent 59% of their workforce, so I am still of the opinion that representation of the Fire Service at the state level should be more diverse. I’ve also looked into the Ambulance Service figures for England and Wales over the same time period. Total Q/KAMs awarded = 39, total awarded to CEOs = 1 (3%). I didn’t post originally to “bash” the Service (one I was in for 15 years hence feeling like I could express my concerns): quite the opposite. It’s because I have had the honour of working for and with so many people who won’t seek praise or promotion necessarily but would be thoroughly deserving of their time at Windsor Castle and to have that KAM against their name, that I feel that the nominations and awards process could do so much better in helping to achieve that.
I’m going to stick my neck out on the line here, but does anyone else feel that it’s somehow inherently wrong that 100% of the KFSMs awarded today are to Chief Fire Officers? Is there genuinely no one else in the organisation worthy of the honour? Congratulations to them and all that, but it feels these days like it’s a rite of passage for CFOs, which surely defeats the object somewhat!

Good governance is essential and the foundation for authorities. Wise words.
Congratulations to Fiona Cameron from Waverley Borough Council, who has been shortlisted as a #JohnLynchDistinguishedService Award nominee at the ADSO Awards at #ADSOConf2023 Fiona said "I have always thought that having good governance arrangements are like the infrastructure of the council - they aren't sexy but with regular maintenance they enable the work of the council to proceed in good order. Democratic Services are there to run the machinery of governance and do the maintenance, and if all is working well we can be almost invisible. If the machinery isn't working so well, our efforts become a little more obvious as we do our best to keep things moving along without the tracks." Good luck and find out who wins at the Conference!

Anyone that knows me understands that I like to keep a low profile. Working with others and supporting what they do. I find being behind the scenes comfortable. Sometimes we need to push out of our comfort zone. The squirmy video of me is an attempt to do that, with the intent to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone too. There are so many businesses that are doing great things. Maybe like me you prefer doing than being seen. What I have learnt from the Techies Awards is celebrating what you do publicly can boost the confidence of even the most introverted amongst us. If you have a business that's doing something great, please consider entering The Business Exchange Awards. You may be surprised at how much fun it is. Writing down what you are doing and have achieved is a positive experience in and of itself. If you win an award, even better!
