Lurking beneath the surface, underwater drones represent a burgeoning technological frontier for the maritime sector. Yet, for the behemoths of the seas – large commercial ships – these drones also pose emerging risks. Collisions with autonomous drones could inflict substantial damage to a ship's hull, potentially jeopardizing vessel integrity and even causing environmental disasters like oil spills (https://lnkd.in/d8ZBCuXM). Moreover, signal interference from drones could disrupt critical navigation and communication systems, increasing the likelihood of dangerous accidents or navigational errors (https://lnkd.in/d3MhWbcB). The safe integration of underwater drones into the maritime domain demands clear regulations, advanced collision avoidance systems, and comprehensive measures. To reap the benefits of this promising technology, proactive collaboration between industry stakeholders is essential. What are “No Drone Zones”? The FAA uses the term "No Drone Zone" to indicate areas where drones or unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are prohibited from operating. These restrictions are specific to each designated location. Some of these zones include: Restricted Airspace: The FAA restricts drone flights in specific portions of airspace. Local Restrictions: In some areas, state, local, territorial, or tribal government agencies regulate drone takeoffs and landings. To help identify these areas, the FAA provides "No Drone Zone" signs. With drones continuously proving to be a threat at large-scale events, it’s imperative that event security professionals take the necessary precautions to protect the airspace and Echodyne radar is purpose-built to protect critical environments from drones.  “In addition to numerous drone sightings on the outskirts of the designated no-fly zones, we unfortunately had to intervene several times,” explains Stephan Kraschansky, CEO of Aaronia Austria. “In most cases, it was enough to warn the pilots about their misconduct. In a few cases, however, we had to take control of the drones and land them safely to avoid any risk. When flying a drone, never underestimate the importance of planning. Spending many hours planning a simple mission which may only last two hours can be commonplace. Identifying significant air and ground hazards, mitigating risk, obtaining permissions, and planning for flyaway and other incidents is crucial to performing a well executed mission. A documented flight plan and risk assessment is an absolute must. When talking about drone crashes pilot error is the most common cause where fatigue, poor communication, and distraction are related, however, other aspects such as improper preflight check, battery drain, use and set of RTH, reliance on obstacle detection, and poor weather among others, can increase the likelihood of a drone-related incident. Is the FAA recreational pilot drone test hard? No, not at all. Our youngest daughter took the recreational pilots test at 12 and passed without any prompts. The FAA has 17 separate entities listed on their website, including Tactical Aviation as a company with which to learn about and then take the test. In Ukraine, drone on drone dogfighting is very common. In this instance, a Russian drone, on its way to target the Ukrainian drone, gets hit by the dropped payload. This results in a missed drop and both drones survive. In many cases, targeting a hovering drone attempting to aim a drop can be more successful than small arms fire or alternative counter-measures.
