In the ever-evolving dance of growing a marketing and professional services firm, staying attuned to the latest in new business practices isn’t just beneficial—it’s vital. Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the launch of the jfdi and Opinium annual new business barometer, superbly hosted by Camilla Honey, Mark Clark, and their stellar teams—drawing participation from over 250 industry leaders. My reflections on the insights shared: 💃 Strategic imperative: It’s clear that a well-positioned and targeted approach to new business, leveraging connections, partnerships and referrals, impacts an agency’s ability to scale and compete. 💃 Investing in growth: For many agencies, the study’s insights into how they invest in their marketing highlights a ‘hand-to-mouth’ approach. Creating a strategic opportunity for those increasing their share of voice and building their pipelines sustainably. 💃 The true cost of lost pitches: The aching pain of a pitch gone awry—even more painful when the true cost of time and money is known. Within this narrative lies a crucial lesson: to cherry-pick opportunities with the care they deserve. 💃 Emphasis on mental health: The conversation on the toll of new business pursuits on our mental well-being struck a chord. As leaders, our role extends beyond strategy to the well-being of our teams. Our resilience is only as strong as the care we extend towards each other. 💃 Pixels and passion: The efficiency of marketing automation and the vibrant community on LinkedIn underscore the limitless potential of digital engagements. But the irreplaceable energy and connection of real-life interactions and events remind us that at the heart of every transaction and trend lies the timeless power of human touch and shared experiences. 💃 The art of pricing: A delicate balance between offering value and safeguarding our worth. A noteworthy discussion on the role of pricing in winning pitches and the challenges of procurement negotiations reflects the complexities faced on both sides. For those that didn’t know, more often than not companies and professionals are buying awards, not earning them. This isn’t just misleading. It devalues real achievements. Think about it. You’re told you’ve won an award, but there’s a catch – you need to pay. For a table at the event, a membership, a sponsorship, a SaaS license expansion, even the award itself. This isn’t recognition.
