During the last connect session, one of the students raised a question on common advices regarding architecture internships 📗 📐 One in particular was the about picking a small firm over a large one. Notion behind - you get to learn more than just technical drawings with small teams. I got the same advice during my internship. Based on my experience I have a slightly different opinion. As a first-time intern working for a short period of time - it's important to maintain focus and learn technical drawings. Sometimes very small teams do not have the right resources to provide focused learning, messing up the learning mandate of internship. 30 DAYS Challenge with Adedamola Okoya-Johnson DAY 23: Importance of Construction Site Visit Growing up in a developing environment, I was surrounded by construction sites. This exposure gave me a basic understanding of building materials and construction methods, which significantly helped me during my architecture theory classes. Seeing these processes firsthand made concepts clearer, in ways that textbooks alone couldn't. This is why internships and industrial training (IT) are so important for architecture students. They provide the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world situations and gain practical insight that enriches learning. In my opinion, practical experience is essential for anyone pursuing architecture or any other hands-on field. As I am now a few months into my internship, I can say I have learned a lot. The knowledge that has been provided to me during this internship is unforgettable and much appreciated! Here is a list of a few things I have learned: - How to set up, use, and properly layout a site using GPS equipment. The site emphasizes the importance of measuring for accuracy and planning, scheduling, and communication in the construction process. Accuracy is crucial as it ensures that cabinets and shelves fit within their designated spaces. Planning, scheduling, and communication are also crucial as mistakes can lead to wasted time and effort. For instance, if cabinets and shelves are incorrectly chosen, the process can be time-consuming and wasteful, resulting in wasted time and effort. Here’s what she shared: 🔹 About Phoebe: "I'm interning with the R&D department at the corporate office. I recently completed my second year at Georgia Tech, majoring in Civil Engineering. I’m also from Atlanta, Georgia." 🔹 Internship Experience at Schnabel: "My internship at Schnabel has been great! Everyone is kind and willing to share their knowledge. I’ve enjoyed visiting job sites, applying classroom knowledge, and working with fellow interns. I’ve been involved in micropile load tests at M&T Bank Stadium, job support for SOMOS and Eccles, and R&D projects like analyzing waterfront tiebacks, concrete maturity, and deflection of a hanging mast. This experience has been eye-opening and shaped my future career goals." 🔹 Most Important Lesson Learned: "The most important lesson I’ve learned so far is that it’s okay to ask questions or ask for help. I’m halfway through college, so I still have a lot to learn. Everyone at Schnabel is a great resource, and I need to take advantage of all the knowledge they have." 🔹 Free Time Fun: "I really enjoy being outside in the sun, whether hiking, running, or sitting in a park reading a book. Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well.
