I actually had a student qualify for the Fresh Start program For the Return-To-School Option, What Must Happen To Qualify For Fresh Start By September 30, 2024? According to guidance NASFAA has received from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), all of the following must take place before a student who is returning to school can take advantage of Fresh Start by the September 30, 2024 deadline: The student must be enrolled, which is defined in 34 CFR 668.2(b) as meeting the school’s registration requirements, on or before September 30, 2024; The school must have received an Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) for the enrolled student on or before September 30, 2024; and The school must have offered (packaged or awarded) the aid on or before September 30, 2024. The student does not need to have started classes by that date, and the aid does not need to be disbursed by that date. As an alternative, the student could contact their loan servicer on or before September 30, 2024 to request and qualify for Fresh Start. See ED's Get Out of Default With Fresh Start webpage.

I listened to a podcast this week in which a VP of Student Affairs spoke about résumé creation and interview skills (delivered via Career Services) as being key for graduates to get a job. Those are obviously important facets of a job search. However, if higher education doesn't start embedding ways for students to showcase the skills and competencies that are learned during a student's college experience, having a pretty résumé or being able to answer questions won't matter. Why? Because there are thousands of resumes, and an interview only happens if you are selected for one. Most students enroll in a higher education degree/credential program to enhance their career possibilities. Institutions need to re-tool their Student Affairs / Career Services shops to focus on the direct connections between learning, skills, and employability. Those verified pathways are what matter...immensely. And that's what students are paying for. An additional thought/update: Career Services departments should be among the most funded and innovative areas within a university. They are literally carrying the entire institution in the sense that 99.90% of students enroll because of the direct connection between higher education and careers.
