Women in Global Health

Earlier this week, Women in Global Health (WGH) proudly represented a gender-equal perspective at the WHO’s 12th Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB12) in Geneva. As a non-State actor in official relations with WHO, WGH is committed to amplifying women’s voices in global health governance, not least in shaping responses to global health emergencies. Ann Spitalny Bacon, co-lead of Women in Global Health Finland delivered WGH's statement at INB12. With a background in nursing and a deep commitment to sexual and reproductive health, Ann highlighted the urgent need for gender-responsive health policies that recognize and support the essential role of women in healthcare. Ann raised 3 key points: 1️⃣ Universal Health Coverage (UHC): WGH supports INB12’s emphasis on UHC as a foundation for pandemic preparedness. Ann underscored the necessity for gender-responsive UHC, which ensures health access for all genders, especially during crises. 2️⃣ Gender Equality in Governance: A truly resilient pandemic response requires gender-equal representation in all health emergency governance. WGH commends the IMB for advocating this, especially as women’s voices, particularly from the Global South, are often marginalized in decision-making processes. 3️⃣ Support for Health Workers: Women make up 70% of health workers and 90% of frontline staff, yet they often face unsafe conditions, inadequate roles, and harassment. WGH called on the IMB to recognize that robust health systems and global health security rely on health workers being supported by safe, dignified working conditions grounded in equality and respect. 🎉 Congratulations to Women in Global Health Argentina on a successful first inaugural Health Leaders Colloquium held on October 31st! The event brought together over 400 leaders, including health ministers from four provinces, former ministers, and representatives from the World Bank, UNICEF, the United Nations, and both the private and public sectors. The discussions addressed critical challenges in innovation, digital health, and the importance of effective communication in healthcare. The World Bank Group launched its Gender Strategy 2024-2030 this month, focusing on accelerating gender equality, empowering women through universal health access, and ending poverty on a livable planet. Our Communications Coordinator, Leylah Hadrovic, joined discussions alongside the World Bank/IMF Annual Meetings. Leylah observed a notable point during the sessions: "Women still have only two-thirds of the legal rights that men have globally. It was clear that some member states were dismissive of the data presented, which underscores the need for stronger advocates for women’s leadership in healthcare and beyond." 🔴 Global Health Financing at a 13-Year Low: New analysis from The ONE Campaign reveals a troubling trend: when we remove COVID-19 funding, global health aid reached its lowest point in 13 years in 2021. This raises serious concerns about the future resilience of our health systems. At Women in Global Health, we’re concerned that underinvestment in health systems could undo years of progress, especially for women. The upcoming global health replenishments (Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, The Global Fund, World Health Organization, Pandemic Fund) will be critical in determining if the world will prioritize long-term health investments.
