We provide design-forward structural engineering and facade design services to leading architectural design teams.

About us

Studio NYL, a dynamic structural engineering design practice based in Boulder, provides unique national and international design talent. Julian Lineham, originally from London, and Chris O’Hara, originally from New York, infuse their extensive experience of Colorado’s building industry with their knowledge of multiple global construction technologies and techniques. Their close collaboration over the years has evolved into Studio NYL’s singular approach to structural engineering services. Julian and Chris share a passion for architecture that has led many of their clients to compliment them as “architects specializing in structural engineering. ” These engineers promote a collaborative, holistic view of structural design built on an appreciation and knowledge of the complete building system including all of its components. They offer an enhanced level of service from competition stage through to building occupancy. Studio NYL believes strongly in open communication and flexible working arrangements, which can include working in a client’s office at critical stages from competition and conceptual phases through to detailed design and construction coordination. The result of their proven approach is an appropriate, efficient design fully integrated with the architecture and all of the building systems. Wherever possible and appropriate, Studio NYL utilizes exposed, aesthetically detailed structure that complements the building’s form and function. An integral part of Studio NYL’s philosophy of design is the promotion of sustainable building philosophies through the efficient use of structural systems and the resulting conservation of materials. Studio NYL’s approach to engineering results in the creation of a structure that enhances rather than limits a design. They draw on their knowledge and years of experience to allow architects to realize a vision, often through innovative combinations of traditional and contemporary structural ideas.

Project Engineer, Enrico Gutierrez, is our next team member highlight for our #SNYLturns20 series. When did you first become interested in architecture or engineering as a career? 🎤”Funny enough, computer games were an early source of inspiration for my interest in art and architecture. Growing up, the process of building and designing something, whether it is a virtual city or the theme park of my dreams, was very attractive to me. The sense of accomplishment after seeing something completed was a major reason architecture/engineering appealed to me.” What is your favorite Denver-area building or structure? Why? 🎤”Out of all of the amazing buildings that have gone up in the Denver area since moving to Colorado, one of my favorite buildings is the historic Denver Union station. The building, along with the subsequent development of its surrounding neighborhood, quickly became a hub for me to grab coffee, read, and people watch.” What has been your most proud moment as an architect/engineer? 🎤”I think my most memorable moment was the first time that I saw one of my projects fully completed.” What do you see as the largest barrier to a zero-waste building, city, and world? 🎤”Studies show that concrete generates 8% of human-made CO2 emissions. As engineers, it is important for us to reduce the quantities of concrete that we specify in our projects, and to specify efficient concrete mixes.” Any guilty pleasures you would recommend? 🎤”Buying yourself a nice bike - it fundamentally changed how I perceive the built environment. Plus, it's great exercise!”

The Denver Botanic Gardens Science Pyramid is a museum space dedicated to the research performed at the Gardens. The design is intended to show that bespoke architecture can also be a high-performance sustainable building. The building’s intent is that beautiful iconic structures can also be high-performance buildings to set an example that these goals are not mutually exclusive. This combination of beauty and environmentally conscious design aligns with the Garden’s mission. Studio NYL provided Structural and Facade design services. As this building has a complex form and is sited in a manner that does not permit easy access for construction equipment, the design needed to take into account a wide variety of constraints. The schedule also represented a challenge in that the structure needed to be designed and built in 9 months. Using high-definition modeling and prefabrication techniques Studio NYL provided not just design drawings but also shop drawings and fabrication models for many of the subcontractors.

It was an honor yesterday for Founding Principal Julian Lineham to accompany the Institution of Civil Engineer’s (ICE) President Anusha Shah and Director General & Secretary Janet Young and represent ICE Americas Members as the ICE Americas Council member at the American Society of Civil Engineers’ (ASCE) world headquarters. We had meetings with ASCE’s past and current President, Executive Director and other ASCE officers. We were later joined by Presidents from The Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC), Pan American Union of Engineers (UPADI) and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO). Great discussions about current initiatives of all of the organizations, and future collaborations to accelerate work towards mitigating climate change and improving resiliency of communities. We also had an afternoon meeting with the Secretary of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). #institutionofcivilengineers #americansocietyofcivilengineers #resiliency #sustainability

Two of our collaborations with Marlon Blackwell Architects earned awards!! Congrats to the team

Receiving awards from your AIA chapter is valued recognition. Winning two of them is twice as nice. Thank you to AIA Arkansas for the great conference and allowing Marygrove Early Recognition Center and the Ledger building to receive a Merit and Honor award. And above all, thank you to our partners and consultants on helping these buildings achieve these accolades. #AIA #AIAArkansas
