In the UK, a 17-year-old male has been arrested in Walsall as part of the investigation into a cyber security incident affecting Transport for London (TfL). He was questioned by officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) and has been bailed. TfL runs the capital's public transport network, including buses and the Tube. It is understood some customer data was compromised, including customer names and contact details. The Oyster card is a smartcard that is pre-loaded with pay-as-you-go credit. You can use it to pay for travel on public transport in London. Some Oyster card refund data may also have been accessed. This could include bank account numbers and sort codes of around 5,000 customers. Residents of Buda, Texas were left without the internet due to an outage at their provider Spectrum. The company’s team worked quickly on restoring service but did not say how many people were affected. Spectrum's parent company, Charter Communications, blamed "vandalism" to its network as the cause of the outage and the police have launched an investigation. Slim CD, a processing gateway that manages credit card payments for U.S. and Canadian merchants, has revealed that it was hit by a cyberattack. The breach has potentially exposed the credit card details of 1.7 million individuals. Slim CD supports a wide range of payment processors, including Elavon, Worldpay, and FirstData. The breach, which occurred between August 2023 and June 2024, compromised sensitive personal and credit card information which includes users’ credit card numbers, expiration dates, names, and addresses. Service for America, a program developed alongside the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management, is a recruitment and hiring push that will help connect Americans with available jobs in cybersecurity, technology, and artificial intelligence. The White House Office of the National Cyber Director launched a program to help fill the gap of about 500,000 available cybersecurity jobs across the country. The program’s major emphasis is to reach job candidates without traditional qualifications, such as computer science or engineering backgrounds. Federal initiatives are also underway to support neurodivergent candidates and those who are blind and visually impaired. Earlier this year, the administration announced a $244 million investment for cybersecurity recruitment drives. An Iranian firm is reported to have paid at least $3 million in ransom money to stop hackers from releasing sensitive information on account holders from as many as 20 domestic banks in the worst cyberattack the country has seen. The cyberattack forced banks to shut down cash machines across the country. The cable and internet provider Optimum experienced a widespread outage on Monday evening in the Metro New York area. The outage started at around 8 p.m. and by 9 p.m., over 9,700 people were reporting an outage in their Optimum service. There were 35-minute wait times for customers calling Optimum customer service. The oil and fracking giant, Halliburton, one of the world’s largest energy companies which has close to 48,000 employees in dozens of countries, has confirmed in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that its network was hacked and that threat actors “accessed and exfiltrated information” following a cyberattack. A ransomware gang known as RansomHub is taking credit for the cyberattack. The form 8-K filing mentions that an unauthorized third party accessed and exfiltrated sensitive information from Halliburton systems, and the company is now in the process of determining the exact scope of the cyberattack. Durex, a popular global brand, has become almost generic with the condom. Durex India, the Indian subsidiary of the British condom and personal lubricants brand, has had an embarrassing data leak that has exposed its customers’ personal information including customer names, phone numbers, email addresses, shipping addresses, the products ordered, and the amount paid. The exact number of affected customers is not known. Those researching the leak found evidence that the information of hundreds of people had been exposed because of a lack of proper authentication on its order confirmation page. Dick's Sporting Goods said on Wednesday that an unauthorized third party had access to its information systems, including certain confidential data. While Dick's did admit certain confidential information was accessed, it did not say exactly what it was, nor to whom it belongs. The sporting goods store filed an 8-K form with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), notifying the regulator of a cybersecurity incident. The sporting goods retailer immediately engaged with its external cybersecurity experts to investigate and contain the threat.
