"Walkabout Mini Golf's new 8-Bit Lair is chock full of nods to the 1980s with one of Mighty Coconut's strongest narratives presented through theme park story design. The course is the third in the Walkabout Evil Lairs series following Ice Lair and Laser Lair, joining dozens of others as the studio is already planning future releases into 2026. Walkabout's original developer and Mighty Coconut studio head Lucas Martell offered UploadVR a behind-the-scenes design tour, mentioning inspirations including Die Hard, Tron, and WarGames. The video below works as a commentary track if you keep it playing in the background while moving through the course on any platform." — Ian Hamilton, UploadVR

"Mighty Coconut, they've been on fire recently. They've published their Pocket Edition iOS app which has been topping the charts, their newest course dropped last week 8-Bit Lair, now friend of the show Edward Felix spent the weekend earlier this year making an 8-Bit Arcade version that you can play in Arcade Legend." — Daniel Sodera, Let's Talk Oculus Podcast

“8-Bit Lair offers a unique and visually distinctive addition to Walkabout Mini Golf. While it leans heavily on retro aesthetics, it also still presents a solid mini-golf challenge that fits seamlessly within the game’s VR format. It’s a standout among Mighty Coconut’s themed courses and an engaging option for players who appreciate both mini-golf and video game nostalgia.” — Press Play Media

“From a certain point of view I guess you could say the world-building here is just TOO GOOD. But if that’s the worst thing I can say about this, then why aren’t you downloading (8-Bit Lair) already?” — Noah Nelson, Founder & Publisher of No Proscenium

“Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies are also gaining traction as training tools in adaptive golf. I’ve seen how VR training can simulate golf course environments, allowing participants to practice their swings under different conditions. By removing physical constraints and providing a space for safe experimentation, VR and AR technologies are bridging the gap between rehabilitation and recreation, making the sport more accessible to a wider audience.”

The response to Walkabout Mini Golf: 8-Bit Lair has been… totally tubular! Made with love by hand by our 100% independent, player-funded studio of artists, this course represented not only a particular kind of nostalgia and self-referential sarcasm (a VR video game experience set inside a VR video game studio in the 80s), but also a feat of tech art particularly as it pushed what was possible on stand-alone headsets for open-world, multiplayer performance and aesthetics. We’re so grateful that it landed with our players and with those reporting on it. #virtualreality #indiegamedev #themedexperiences #VR #XR
