We're thrilled to share Architectural Record's June 2024 cover story featuring the newly renovated Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC. Reopening to the public on June 21, the Folger houses the world's largest collection of Shakespeare's printed works. Over the past ten years, KieranTimberlake has partnered with Folger to provide strategic planning services, culminating in an expanded site and reimagined visitor experience. To complement the 1932 landmarked building by Paul Cret, KieranTimberlake went below, literally digging beneath the structure to create a more equitable and welcoming experience for all. “This is a building of great rooms,” said Partner Stephen Kieran. “We modernized the three historic rooms, but in a silent way. And we created the gardens as outdoor rooms.” The 6,000 square foot addition includes a lobby, exhibition halls, learning lab, gift shop, and offices, while vastly improving accessibility and circulation. “This project offers an alternative—without any changes to Cret's original elevations—and a way forward for institutions seeking to grow but contending with limitations,” they write. Situated on a 25-acre forested site in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the Reinholds residence embraces its environment through massing, scale, materiality, and performance. The house is positioned at the north side of a meadow adjacent to the forest edge, framing views of the sloped landscape and fostering visual and physical connections to the natural environment, a priority for the client. The main living space anchors the plan, optimizing views of forest, meadow, and an internal court defined by bedroom wings. In addition to using locally sourced and fabricated natural materials throughout the house, the project incorporates high-performance triple-glazed windows, and a super insulated envelope to optimize thermal performance and a low carbon footprint. Remote but resilient, the house will be self-sustaining with a geothermal ground source heat pump system, hydronic radiant heating throughout, and a 25,000-kWh solar array with battery backup. Sitework has begun and construction completion is anticipated in spring 2026. The American Institute of Architects (AIA)'s latest 2030 By the Numbers Report was released this week and from 2022 to 2023, Tally usage soared by nearly 2,000%! We're thrilled to see an increase in embodied carbon calculation tools across all reported projects. We developed Tally, the first Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) app fully integrated into Autodesk® Revit®, to help designers quantify embodied carbon in building materials. In 2021, we gifted Tally to Building Transparency to increase its accessibility to the entire building and construction industry. We look forward to continuing our partnership as they expand Tally's capacities and audience to produce real, long-term impact on sustainability in the built environment. #AIA2030

Research Director Ryan Welch represented KieranTimberlake at the International Masonry Institute's recent Masonry Sustainability Summit. In addition to advancing the conversation around transparency and climate action, he got to refine his bricklaying technique (second image).
The International Masonry Institute hosted a 2-day Masonry Sustainability Summit to explore expanded coordination between industry partners and manufacturers of concrete masonry units and clay brick. Discussions focused on expanded data transparency and improved product category rules (PCR) and environmental product declarations (EPD) to support lifecycle assessment tools. Summit participants also had the opportunity to have a little fun and work with our masonry instructors.
