The year is 2035. Much has changed in the 11 years since Rohit Chopra ushered in the final rule on open banking for financial services firms. A human hasn't flipped a burger 🍔 in a McDonald's since 2030. Few people own gas-powered cars; and even fewer drive any car. Sadly, in 2035 JNCO jeans 👖 are inexplicably cool again 🤷♂️ Lending has also been transformed. Mortgage lenders in 2035 have instantaneous access to a prospective borrower's entire financial history. Instead of relying solely on inflexible, Nixon-era selling guides, they can contextualize a customer's financial history like never before. And it's because that data was shared directly with the lender by the borrower herself. In fact, it's been a while since customer data was controlled and sold by a few companies pushing "monopolistic practices" that, in the words of Chopra, "enrich incumbent networks at the expense of consumers, businesses, and creators." Open banking is coming to mortgage, and it will put customers in the driver's seat. Flávia Furlan Nunes has spent the last few weeks talking to mortgage executives, lawyers, policymakers and vendors to see where the industry is in the journey toward open banking.
