Pet owners continue to prioritize products and services that enhance their pets’ quality of life. Members of our Consumer Group recently saw this trend’s influence on pet M&A at #SUPERZOO, North America's largest pet retail event. “Health and wellness remains top of mind for pet parents,” says Ryan Budlong, a managing director. “Companies that help pets stay active for longer are in demand and growing quickly.” Pet food, treats, supplements, and meal topper businesses that offer nutritional and functional benefits all fall into this category. Because of their positive impact on pet wellbeing, these items drive long-term customer retention and repeat purchases—two traits that are highly appealing to pet investors. Fresh food is a prime example of consumers seeking products that have visibly higher-quality ingredients and intuitive health advantages. Another area of the pet market that continues to capture attention is the premium cat segment. “Cat parents are increasingly looking for higher quality products which is leading to strong category growth and thriving brands,” says Budlong.
