It was good to be at the World Football Summit to address together with Jerome Perlemuter, Alexander Bielefeld and Lorena Torres Ronda, PhD, EMBA the growing issue of congested calendar and player workload while questioning the current status of the governance of international football. Most probably the most debated topic during the two working days in Sevilla, including interventions and messages from Maheta Molango and Javier Tebas Medrano which all converged: - the calendar is broken due to the unsustainable trend of adding international fixture to an already congested calendar. - the governance which regulates the International Match Calendar and its mandatory release of players is not fit for purpose: professional leagues and players’ unions must be at table. - the current calendar harms the economic value of domestic competitions while creating operational challenges to professional leagues. - We have heard clear and loud the voice of several players during the past few days: the impact on players’ health and their workload capacity is becoming unsustainable. - Legal action is now the only responsible step for European leagues and player unions to protect football, its ecosystem and its workforce from unilateral decisions. Thanks to Jan Alessie and its team for having us!
