For some building owners, Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) is a relatively new concept compared to traditional heating and cooling air systems. With the unfamiliarity comes misconceptions about VRF. One misconception is that VRF is viewed as being expensive. In fact, the opposite is true! Building owners stand to benefit with various VRF cost savings. Below are three ways VRF reduces overall heating and air conditioning costs: 1.) Modular Design VRF systems are easier to install than conventional systems, with the outdoor units being sized to fit into elevators, they're able to be installed without the use of a crane. A VRF systems' modular components allow for floor-by-floor completion based on tenant requirements. This allows developers to defer installation costs until leases are signed. 2.) Compact Refrigerant Delivery Refrigerant delivery to zones requires small piping lines instead of large ductwork. This design allows for smaller plenums with reducing the amount of space between floors. The result? Rooms appear more expansive with tall ceiling heights. Smaller plenums also allow developers to increase usable space with additional floors. 3.) Energy-Saving Heat Recovery VRF enhances efficiency by utilizing a heat recovery process that enables simultaneous heating and cooling. It uses electronic expansion valves and a smart control system to manage energy-saving heat exchange. It repurposes wasted heat into free warmth in the building, (i.e. apartment or multi-family dwelling) reducing outdoor unit energy usage and resulting in operational savings. With its cost savings, high-performance, and energy efficiency, VRF has become the fastest-growing segment of the commercial HVAC industry. Encore Mechanical is proud to be at the forefront of this innovative heating and air conditioning technology. Contact us to learn more about how you can start saving money with VRF! There's no debating that HVAC units have their work cut out for them in areas with extreme heat and humidity, such as right here in North Texas. Traditional AC systems ignore localized and variable heat loads, cooling large multi-room areas the same year-round – frequently causing tenants to endure hot spots through the summer.   Fortunately, being more advanced than conventional HVAC, Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) provides personalized temperature management to ensure indoor comfort in these extremely hot months.     Here are 3 things #VRF providers can do during design and installation to ensure optimal performance for Texas summers: 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Shading the outdoor unit from the sun is the best way to increase the performance of a system in summer. When it's not possible to be installed in the shade (which oftentimes it's not) units against a north facing wall receive the least amount of direct sunlight, and East facing walls are the next best option. 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 For the fluctuating load demands of high occupancy areas (e.g. Classrooms and Conference areas), consider two options to prevent moist outside air (OA) being introduced into the room when there is not a demand on the VRF system for cooling. Option #1 Utilize CO² sensors to ensure OA is only supplied when occupancy levels demand it. Option #2 (The best solution) Treat OA with a Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) which cools and dehumidifies 100% outdoor air making it neutral ~ 72 degrees and 50% RH. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 Maximum air flow at outdoor and indoor equipment is really important on the hottest days. Therefore, locate outdoor equipment with clearances and proximity to a hose bibb to encourage washing pollen and grass clippings from condenser coil. Consider Return Air Filter Grilles (RAFG) and filter racks with nominally sized filters that make filter changes easy. The way VRF is installed is vitally important to the way the solution performs in hot and humid conditions. Leave it to the experts to get the job done right the first time.
